The Dropbox Poets Society – Part 1

Posted by Jon Ying on July 09, 2008

It began with one limerick.  The world would never be the same.

As some of you may know, we’ve released the alpha version of our Linux client to a small handful of people for testing.  Instead of just sticking to a conventional lottery, we decided to have a little fun with our second wave of invites.  Since Dropbox has been in existence, it has become apparent that many of our users are poetically talented.  It was time to put their skills to the test.  Here were the initial rules:

Write a haiku ( first line: 5 syllables, second line: 7, third line: 5) explaining why you deserve a chance to test the client before everyone else.

an example of a haiku:

angry linux hordes
bombard my e-mail box
like zombies on crack

creativity and odes to my dashing good looks score brownie points. good luck!

And here are a few of our favorites:

What’s that, linux man?
rsync got you down? that’s sad
I can has dropbox?
- Adam H.

Freedom from dual boot
Calls out to me from the cloud
Linux soon flies, too.
- David H.

The dropbox motto
is incredibly simple
die vile thumbdrive die
- Michael N.

Dropbox I want you!
Together we will run free
Probably too late

I am not too proud
to beg, grovel, cry and sob
please, please, please, please, please
- Craig B. (A late entry)

in lolspeak:
i no has dropbox
but teh lolrus he has it
please to let me has?

dropbox on linux
awesomeness beyond belief
Snuffleupagus
- Patrick W.

We even had a few more international haikus:

Guck mal! Dropbox kommt!
Die Zukunft ist schon fast hier
Ich sag’ “Willkommen!”
- David H.

And an entirely legit one from a Japanese user to boot:

Li-na-ku-su-no
Ho-ru-da-ni-ki-e-yu-ku
de-e-ta-ka-na
- Ken N.

Our CEO Drew, joined the fray…

Dropboxed penguins cheer
It’s just an apt-get away
What’s the URL?
- Drew H.

And finally, my personal favorite

Jon Y’s face is an
image of pure physical
perfection – ‘nuf said.
- Matthew W.

I’d like to thank all of our users for participating– all of us here at the office had a blast reading your entries and I’m sure you had some fun making them too.  In case you still haven’t gotten your fill of haikuey goodness, Samsung just happened to have a haiku contest on the same exact day we held ours.  It’s okay Samsung, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and I’ll let it slide this time.  Keep in mind, though, that I won’t be so forgiving the next time around.

But now for the reason you’re all here:  Invites!  Anyways, keep your eyes peeled for the next time we publish more stunning gems of Dropbox poetry.

‘Til next time.

How do I uninstall dropbox. There are some conflicts with my installing some other open source programs, so I need to uninstall all of dropbox.

  • I wish I can write a haiku, I always find it so difficult ...
    I love the first one:

    What’s that, linux man?
rsync got you down? that’s sad
    I can has dropbox?

    So great Adam H.!

  • Tired of Waiting
This whole thing is getting pathetic... No news on the blog whatsoever, no replies on the comments, no invites... Seems pretty dead to me. Please let me know so I can save my time by finally stopping to check the website...
  • Qrees
Blog looks dead, but what do you need blog for when linux client is already available and there are news on forum everyday?

  • Over It
Getting a bit sick of trying to get in. Think I'll forget it and find another option. You guys are gonna blow it if you don't hurry up: competitors are springing up everywhere and are accepting new accounts!
  • Qrees
The problem is that there is no simmilar software available for Linux. There is avn, rsync etc. but all require much more time and don't work in background.
  • tim
JungleDisk? Don't think it has public sharing, but for an offsite net backup it's pretty good. Not free, but uses Amazon's S3 storage and prices are peanuts for small use (I pay about 15 cents a month I think!).
  • ken
whats going on here... no post on updates or anything in over 6 weeks.... look at your may 13 post.... "promise to communicate more frequently"
  • Qrees
Anyway I could participate in alpha version of dropbox for Linux? I use mostly Linux, but I can't sue dropbox (my haiku is somewhere up).

I've been using svn also, but dropbox is better for some tasks and mush easier to use.
  • Chris
Common you gotta let more invites out, i'm a legal student working on an openSUSE desktop and a Macbook Pro. I need to have a kick ass service like this that caters to linux. I will pay for it, i don't care!
  • emanaton
    Greetings awesome dropbox team!

I've received an invite from a workmate of mine, but it appears from the blog that the linux app is only available for through this haiku contest, right? If not, where does one go to snag it? If so... well...
