Web makeover!

Posted by Jon Ying on December 12, 2008

Greetings Dropbox citizens!

Did you open up http://www.dropbox.com today to find something new and shiny?  After several weeks of hard work, the web team is proud to unveil the redesigned Dropbox web interface.

A few things you’ll notice:

  1. Bulk operations (finally)!  Moving/deleting folders is now possible!
  2. Navigation is now on the top rather than the left.
  3. Information/actions are now displayed in small sideboxes on the right
  4. Font changes! (lucida grande on mac, lucida sans unicode for windows)
  5. Expanded footer
  6. The FAQ is gone and has been replaced by a comprehensive help center
  7. RSS feed for recent events!
  8. While ‘Files’ is still accessible, the default view is the home page.  To those of you worrying that the feed takes up too much space, we’ll be addressing this in the near future.
  9. ‘Upload’ has also been integrated into the filebrowser
  10. More information for file revisions
  11. Much more!

More changes are on their way too, so sit tight.

So, how does it look?  What do you like?  What don’t you like?  Let us know!

I kind of liked the old fonts a bit better (I'm on Windows usually), but from the last few minutes of playing with it I think it's a welcome upgrade!

One thing I really liked about the old interface was the ability to hide the invites box. That ability appears to have disappeared in the new interface.

As with any re-design, it takes some getting used to (facebook, last.fm ;)

I think i'll like it by the time the year ends :P

Well done guys! Big step up in terms of usability!

I'd love to see separate views for the homepage feed and my files, though. Perhaps a seperate section in the navigation called “My files” or something? On first look, it wasn't very clear to me where I could access my files. The files section of the homepage is almost “under the fold”, which is a usability issue that IMHO needs to be addressed. In the new design, it's almost as if my files are the least important thing in the whole interface, when in fact, they're the most important. I'd mark this as a key issue (disclaimer: I do this for a living, so I hope I'm not talking out of my ass).

Here's hoping a mobile-compatible site is on the way, too :P

I like it!

The only thing still missing (IMO) is the ability to checkout Revision on the webpage, vs having to go into the Finder/Explorer/whatever on the desktop.

Very nice. I'd still like to see more features! Specifically, it'd be nice to be able to set filter strings for files not to sync– globally, as well as on a per-folder basis.

I have many generated files that come from some sort of other file (compiled source code, word documents exported as PDF, etc), which really don't need to be sync'ed, and only take up space filling my quote. Moreover, these files change often, and so the version history is deep and unnecessary as well.

I also keep a “tmp” folder which holds temporary files that I download from the web or otherwise obtain, which I don't plan on keeping for long. I would like to keep my entire home directory sync'ed, but this “tmp” folder is large and constantly-changing. It also doesn't need to be sync'ed, and would quickly fill my quota.

All modern version-control systems (which Dropbox is kind-of like, right?) have some sort of system for conditionally ignoring files. For example, users can specify an extension to ignore all files of some type (“*.exe”), or perhaps an exact name to ignore in one folder (“tmp”).

Thoughts?

I am moving from Foldershare (loved it) to Dropbox cause MSoft has screwed the whole thing up. Here's my question: I moved a big folder to Dropbox on one computer. Then, went to a second one and did the same…identical folder that had been synched on Foldershare. On the first computer, the folder has the blue-white “synching arrows” on this big folder. On the second computer, on the same folder in Dropbox, only the green-white “check” appears. I can view any file on the second computer. On the first, with the synching arrows, some individual files in the folder are not viewable…they also have the blue/white synching arrows on them. What's up. I did buy the big version in order to be sure to have enough room.

Dropbox is awesome. When I was studying (Digital Media), we used a folder on the network called “Dropbox”. Obviously something used often with all the students to share files and collab on projects instead of logging the massive 3″ HD around the campus.

After a couple of years and slowly setting up my own business, I often wondered how usefull to set up a server/network to ensure the capability and speeds of storing large files, so I headed down the path of networking (having no qualification and working in that environment was a little mind boggling) and finally (mid 2008) i accomplished it.

Now however, if I investigated (back when I was studying) the terminology “Dropbox” I would of saved a lot of time and energy to acheive something as simple as what DB offers and what they are planning in the near future.

I am only just starting to use it and looking at different possibilities/scenarios in which i can make more use and very shortly looking to upgrade to prem account. Well Done on the ingunuity and accomplishments.

Things that have been mentioned in the firums and around that place I am sure are and will be looked at and can't wait for these geat changes.

Just somethings to add to the wishlist:

- More user friendly for the enduser (for friends and family overseas who may not be computer literate)

Prem Accounts

- Multiple Dropboxes (Used for different clients of my own to track updates on projects)

- Log In option for clients

I'm sure there are plenty more that I will put in the forums…

Again, well done

I use DropBox under Ubuntu to synchronise files between my machines and it works great! I just noticed this morning that DropBox supports file revision (hey guys, no worries if I do whatever mistake with my files then!), and supports files & directories rename and move. That's just amazing!

I also started to use the Public folder and that's just great… right click on the file under Navigator and you get a link to that file.

Guys, you rocks!

I'm just now discovering DropBox. A tech at Data Recovery LLC (where my wife's laptop HDD was for data recovery from a crash) told me about it. I work at two locations (home & office) and this is great. She and I also share some data and we're always trying to figure out if we have the current version. No more, we'll work off the same one. Security is also a big concern of ours and we appreciate any improvements you do in that area.

add an explorer type interface in your website. just for those who wouldn't want to install the software. also speed up the syncing by doing multiple link connection for download/upload.

many thanks!

There's a file browser interface in there. It should be below the activity feed on /home or you can get to it directly by using the URL https://www.getdropbox.com/bro

Or do you mean something that mimics the layout of Windows Explorer or OS X Finder?

I'm new to Dropbox, but I found your site from an article regarding the top 5 applications that all computer users should have. You were listed at number 5. I think you should be #1. This application resolves an issue that myself, and I'm sure many others have been living with for years. Gone are the days of having to carry flash drives, and keeping them updated. Dropbox is fantastic. Keep up the great work and keep the updates coming.

Will there be web hosting?. Uploading to Dropbox is a cinch while uploading to iDisk at Mobileme is futile. Either Apple's application “Backup” is seriously bugged or their whole system is challenged. I have had it since July 2008. Apple gave us 3 months free subscription then an additional 3 months free. It is now February 2009 and all my uploads still come back with the error message “upload failed”. This is why I was asking. I will publish my website at the drop of a hat to another host instead of renewing my subscription with Apple. IWeb is a nice clean way of creating and managing websites; no problem with that! I will just use it to publish somewhere else. Too bad for Apple.

Hello,

I'll thank you the good work with Dropbox.

For my purposes, only one thing more I'd like : to share personalized folder with someone after registering and login in.

Do you think this will be possible in near future Dropbox ?

Thank you

I started using Dropbox after the site change… but I can tell you the site looks and behaves perfectly! I love the use of Lucida Grande, integrating the site into the user interface when I'm at a computer without the synchronizer app. The layout is intuitive and operates almost as well as a computer-based, icon-centric, drag-and-drop interface.

What would really be nice is there was a module (or similar) that I could put in a website that would allow people to upload files to me or the client. A popup type thing with a log in feature for whoever was added to the “shared” group and possibly a guest.

Cool stuff

In the ideal world, I'd be able to navigate within my 68 gb of data files and mark those I want in my Dropbox. They'd then be marked as added so later when I went back to that partition it could see if a file was included in Dropbox

First of all: Thank You so much. This is an amazing thing you got going here.

Here's things I really like about the http://www.getdropbox.com site: It's simple, not cluttered by graphics or colors or ads or stuff like that. The interactive menus are nice.

Here are some ideas I had that might be improvements that seem feasible to me:

(listed in order of personal “wish it had” level, #1 being the thing I wish it had the most)

1. Ability to provide a public URL to a FOLDER in Public, not just individual files.

2. Not sure how to explain this in concise terms but: Someway to provide either a distinction between permanent shares and temporary ones, or an informational activity stream that notifies when a person has received shared file(s), so that the provider may go ahead and delete their copy from their dropbox. Maybe a feature that says “Download to non-dropbox folder with notification” (like I said, not real concise).

3. Easy to access list of users so that when sharing a folder with someone it is not necessary to leave the page to get their email address. Maybe a dropdown field under the “share this folder” that auto-adds to list when a user is selected.

4. Search function / filters.

There were some other things I'm sure but all-in-all I'm very very happy with the service and the site. Thanx so much.

psidre
March 24, 2009

That's the other thing I couldn't remember! thanx – Yeah there needs to be an EXPLICIT instructional for people who are new to the service. There was a lot of learn as you go stuff that me and my associates had to work out about the site. Maybe a tutorial video is in order.
