iPhone Sneak Peek!

Posted by Jon Ying on August 26, 2009

Good news everyone!  The Dropbox iPhone app was officially submitted to the iTunes store last week and now we’ve got to play the waiting game.  Since all of you have been playing the waiting game for far longer than we have (and secrets, secrets are no fun), we’ve decided to give you a sneak peek at some of the features our app will be packing once our benevolent masters at Apple approve it:

Access your Dropbox on the go
-  All the contents of your Dropbox are available for viewing.  You can even stream music and movies in your Dropbox straight to your iPhone.

Download files for offline viewing  – Add files to your ‘Favorites’, and they’ll be accessible at any time.

Take photos and videos and sync them to your Dropbox  – Take a photo from your iPhone and email its public link to a friend in less than a minute.

Share links to files in your Dropbox  – What?  Any file in your Dropbox?  Srsly?

Photo galleries  – Just like the ones online.

We’ll of course keep y’all updated on the app’s submission process, but keep your fingers crossed!  We should also add that Will’s been chipping away at a lot more fun stuff for the iPhone and that the first version of the app is only the beginning of something far more epic.  Sit tight!

Let me paraphrase the email you are about to get from Apple:

“Dear Dropbox,

We are rejecting your application because it may be confusing to end users. How, you may ask? Well have you ever heard of me.com? We are really proud of it, even though it sucks, and hope that if we keep rejecting apps like yours, people will be forced to pay $99 a year to get what you are willing to give away for free.

Lots of love,

Apple”

If they work well, some of those features may actually have me ditch other apps, such as Readdle Docs or SimplifyMedia in favor of dropbox. Yes, I may also have to upgrade my account then, because storage space will get tight…

Great work, can't wait to try it out!

“Share links to files in your Dropbox – What? Any file in your Dropbox? Srsly?”

So does this mean it doesn't have to be in the public folder? And is this why the link expires (from the screenshot of the email)?

Sounds great. I'm planning on getting an iPod touch with the next model update and this would provide an easy way to sync photos and text files between hardware.

Any chance of a 'too big for iPhones' tag for DropBox files? There are some files I need to sync between my iMac and MacBook that would simply clutter an iPhone/touch's limited storage space. For instance, daily backups for books I'm writing. I want those on both Macs as well as stored off-site with you. But I won't even have an application that'll read them on my iPod touch.

Come to think of it, a 'too big for iPhones' tag for folders would make more sense. Anything in such a folder is synced between Macs/PCs but not to an iPhone/touch.

Prepaid Credit Cards rock. You can get them at WalMart (I think) in the states – if not, try your bank.

I'm only 18 so I can't get a CC here in Canada, yet. My local bank charges $2 for the card, then whatever I want to put on it. So do that and just buy 1 year in advance.

What about a Blackberry version?

I know is not as “cool” as the iPhone, but it has a good customer base using it and hey, there is no need to wait and hope Mr. Jobs' crew allows you to distribute!

Plus, mostly business users, that means, lots of potentially payers for your extra space online! (I am one of your current paying customers)

What about sending a file through email as AN ATTACHMENT?

There are more and more systems that can receive an attachment, strip it out and do something with it.

For example, sending a file as an attachment to Google Docs can strip out the attachment and upload it into Google Docs.

Or, sending a file as an attachment to my Kindle device will upload the document into my Kindle.

A link in an email doesn't allow any of those tools to work. I was waiting to see if DropBox iPhone App would have that function because iDisk doesn't.

Any thoughts?

Really looking forward to this, is there any news yet?

Also, feature wise I hope it will be possible to select folders to sync rather than just indevidual files. It will be really cool to have a whole folder of important docs and media allways cached on my iPhone.

Is there gonna be a symbian app for dropbox(or does anyone know similar service for said OS?)

eric
September 18, 2009

Wow this wait is frustrating. I've been doing a search on dropbox in itunes for weeks now waiting for the application to be released. Even more frustrating is that for the longest time I only got one result from my itunes dropbox search which was an application called ZumoDrive. Yesterday a new application showed up in the result called SugarSync. So obviously they are approving applications.

mr_kitty
September 19, 2009

Srsly!

Plain text editing in a Dropbox for iPhone would simplify my workflow soooo much.

I write reports of what I changed at customer sites after each appointment. I keep them in my dropbox so I can reference them on the go.

Creating / editing them on the fly in that same directory would make waiting for the train afterwards so much more productive for me.

Guys where is the App? Apple really sucks when it comes to approving great apps! Can't wait for this. I love Dropbox!

Yeah, what's the deal here? I've watched 2 other apps post to their blog that their apps were submitted after yours and they've both been accepted and on my iPhone for over a week now. I know Apple's review process is tedious, but it sounds like there was something wrong with the submission, since I'm sure the app itself would be allowed (I mean, after all, SugarSync and ZumoDrive have both been on there for a long time…)

DigitalAddict
September 22, 2009

@eric Yes. Even more frustrating is that other large apps that were submitted after Dropbox, but were well publicized, got approved right away. Cough… Rhapsody… cough..

jon
September 23, 2009

It has been over a month now? Seriously, apple is ridiculous. You should release this through back channels so those of us with jailbroken iphones can stop waiting for apple.

Eric
September 23, 2009

Hey Dropbox staff, can you do me a favor real fast, can you please check your “Sent Items” and make sure your request actually went out. Maybe it's actually hung in someone email client and no one actually sent the request. Just a thought :-)

COME ON APPLE! Your iDisk app is safe. I am sure the drones who feel they need to pay $99 a year for your crappy MobileMe service will never figure out how much cooler (and cheaper) Dropbox is. You have nothing to worry about. Just hit that “APPROVE” button and get on with it.

Matter of fact I'll tell ya what Apple, you approve Dropbox this week and I will sign up for a Family Pack MobileMe account just to show my appreciation.

Marcus
September 24, 2009

Hey, Dropbox, you’re being just as opaque as Apple… what’s the status?? I’m positive you would have heard from Apple and had to re-submit by now, there’s no way it’s still sitting on the “to-do” list there. I’ve submitted apps before, it doesn’t take that long.

Did your app crash too much? Have the wrong ratings? Security hole? Memory leak? Plagiarize Apple icons? I would say Apple denied it for being too close to iDisk (which would be ridiculous), but they’ve approved MANY other cloud / server-based file access apps, so I’m sure it’s not the case.

Why can’t someone at dropbox comment on this?

vince baskerville
September 24, 2009

Granted they haven't 'followed up' with this post… but they have posted about this on twitter { http://twitter.com/Dropbox/sta… }

I'd rather them keep up the awesome work with what their doing, and post various updates via twitter than try to follow every blog reply.. (if they had to choose)

Wow. It's been more than a month now. This is ridiculous.

Hey everyone. I figured out what happened by reading the TechCrunch article about DropBox's 2 million users mark.

“Dropbox submitted its iPhone application in the middle of August. It still has not been approved. According to CEO Drew Houston, Apple rejected the application two weeks after submitting to the App Store, but since then they have fixed all the bugs, and re-submitted the app.”

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009

Since it normally takes 7-14 days to get an app response (from my experience), it all depends how long it took the folks to get the bugs fixed before re-submitting. Assuming it took them under a week to fix everything (with a rejection date of around Sep 10th), the app would most likely appear this week! Otherwise, I can't imagine it will be later than next week, unless there were some pretty hefty bugs.

eric
September 29, 2009

Great catch, well that some information at less. I don't know Dropbox Team, maybe a little shout out to your loyal customers letting us know what is up instead of us sitting on this thread for weeks b***hing about Apple. A little communication can go a long way in situations like this.

After you got the movie/video file.

Convert it using DVD catalyst 3. (globalsettings->Conversion) Mark “Enable streaming for Mp4 files”. (Globalsettings->Border) Choose “Fullscreen Stretch” (Also choose your mobile device… There's a lot to choose from).

When the conversation is done, just upload it to dropbox and enter dropbox from device… Now it should stream with a full screen & high quality video.
