iPhone Sneak Peek!

Posted by Jon Ying on August 26, 2009

Good news everyone!  The Dropbox iPhone app was officially submitted to the iTunes store last week and now we’ve got to play the waiting game.  Since all of you have been playing the waiting game for far longer than we have (and secrets, secrets are no fun), we’ve decided to give you a sneak peek at some of the features our app will be packing once our benevolent masters at Apple approve it:

Access your Dropbox on the go
-  All the contents of your Dropbox are available for viewing.  You can even stream music and movies in your Dropbox straight to your iPhone.

Download files for offline viewing  – Add files to your ‘Favorites’, and they’ll be accessible at any time.

Take photos and videos and sync them to your Dropbox  – Take a photo from your iPhone and email its public link to a friend in less than a minute.

Share links to files in your Dropbox  – What?  Any file in your Dropbox?  Srsly?

Photo galleries  – Just like the ones online.

We’ll of course keep y’all updated on the app’s submission process, but keep your fingers crossed!  We should also add that Will’s been chipping away at a lot more fun stuff for the iPhone and that the first version of the app is only the beginning of something far more epic.  Sit tight!

Only reason why I would get an iPhone at the moment haha :D Love dropbox. Just hope you guys give other payment methods cause i don't have Credit Card, and 2GB (5GB max with referals) is just to less.

Love Dropbox :)

August 26, 2009

Cool, but what about WinMo, any future plans for a client for WinMo?

August 26, 2009

Can't wait to download this for my iPhone to replace my web shortcut for you guys :D

August 26, 2009

Yeahhh!!! God, very god :D

August 26, 2009

Will there be an Android app coming soon?

August 26, 2009

Fab, can't wait!

August 26, 2009

Can't really wait… Hope it'll be approved soon!

August 26, 2009

I second this.

Alex Knight
August 26, 2009

OMG this looks so awesome! Can't wait! Keep up the good work.

August 26, 2009

Can the app open .webloc files? (either in Safari or built-in browser) That would be REALLY useful for me.

August 26, 2009

Android build would indeed be nice.

August 26, 2009

Can't wait!

Good work (as usual) dropbox!

August 26, 2009

Let me paraphrase the email you are about to get from Apple:

“Dear Dropbox,

We are rejecting your application because it may be confusing to end users. How, you may ask? Well have you ever heard of me.com? We are really proud of it, even though it sucks, and hope that if we keep rejecting apps like yours, people will be forced to pay $99 a year to get what you are willing to give away for free.

Lots of love,

August 26, 2009

If they work well, some of those features may actually have me ditch other apps, such as Readdle Docs or SimplifyMedia in favor of dropbox. Yes, I may also have to upgrade my account then, because storage space will get tight…

Great work, can't wait to try it out!

August 26, 2009

Awesome! Thanks, Dropbox!

August 26, 2009

Thats great news. well, not for me personally, since I don't have Iphone but for others who has

August 26, 2009

“Share links to files in your Dropbox – What? Any file in your Dropbox? Srsly?”

So does this mean it doesn't have to be in the public folder? And is this why the link expires (from the screenshot of the email)?

August 26, 2009

It looks really great, but it would probably look even better on an Android-device ;)

Keep up the good work!

August 26, 2009

I hope you guys are working on an Android App too! Android is just around the corner for me. I am with Sprint and have been waiting ages for Android. Rumour is that it will be dropping in October.

Would love to see a Dropbox app for me Android!

August 26, 2009

Android takes priority over this!

Derek F.
August 26, 2009

will you be able to edit text files?

August 26, 2009

Yes Android please!

August 26, 2009

Too funny!!!

Go Android!

dan the man
August 26, 2009

I want to have your (dropbox) babies if you're going to able to edit .txt files.

August 26, 2009

I second this, please, allow PayPal!

August 26, 2009

Awesome, submitted you say? Looking forward to trying it out in Feb.

August 26, 2009

I would love to be a beta tester! send me an e-mail! I'm a DB customer :D

August 26, 2009

Am I the only one that started reading this in Professor Farnsworth's voice from Futurama? Looking forward to its release!

Derek Land
August 26, 2009

That is awesome! I've been waiting for the app for ages.

Hope it's cleared for release soon.

August 26, 2009

Sounds great. I'm planning on getting an iPod touch with the next model update and this would provide an easy way to sync photos and text files between hardware.

Any chance of a 'too big for iPhones' tag for DropBox files? There are some files I need to sync between my iMac and MacBook that would simply clutter an iPhone/touch's limited storage space. For instance, daily backups for books I'm writing. I want those on both Macs as well as stored off-site with you. But I won't even have an application that'll read them on my iPod touch.

Come to think of it, a 'too big for iPhones' tag for folders would make more sense. Anything in such a folder is synced between Macs/PCs but not to an iPhone/touch.

August 26, 2009

Android app, please!

August 26, 2009

Awesome, can't wait!

Michael Yurechko
August 26, 2009

Prepaid Credit Cards rock. You can get them at WalMart (I think) in the states – if not, try your bank.

I'm only 18 so I can't get a CC here in Canada, yet. My local bank charges $2 for the card, then whatever I want to put on it. So do that and just buy 1 year in advance.

August 26, 2009

Blizzcon attendance ftw!

August 27, 2009

I just recently came across your iPhone optimized version on the web, but a native app will be killer. I especially like the time-delay file decay. Very cool.

Looking forward to downloading this!

August 27, 2009

I would also love to see an Android app. Pretty please?

Samuel Lavoie
August 27, 2009

nice! can't wait to see and use it on my iPhone 3G guys!

August 27, 2009

August 27, 2009

Will there be push notifications to alert the user when a file has been updated? Similar to Windows where there's a tooltip pop-up in the status bar.

Marcus Hamaker
August 27, 2009

Very cool… now I know that it is cool to code for the iPhone but I think that your service is used by a lot of Blackberry users as well. Ever think of a Blackberry app? Cause I would love that!

August 27, 2009

Android would be great.

August 27, 2009

The Dropbox iPhone website already rocks, so this has made my day :)

August 27, 2009

I hope, you release the app to the appstores in other countries too?

August 27, 2009

…and when are you submitting the Android Version which I need?

Hurry up – there is no time to loose… ;-)

August 27, 2009

Android APP!!!! Seriously you guys, I know the market isn't as big as the iPhone at the moment give it another year or two for the destruction.

August 27, 2009

This is excellent news! I can't wait to try it out. :-) Looks like you guys have put in some great work into it.

August 27, 2009

Great! can't wait!

August 27, 2009

That makes no sense since SugarSync and others exist already. I really want this app since I've used Dropbox for 6 months or so.

August 28, 2009

Android, Android, Android ;-)

August 28, 2009

Wow nice :D:D:D, can it also auto sync the camera roll ? :o

August 28, 2009

cydia! :)

August 30, 2009

How much it will cost?

Ali Shabdar
August 30, 2009

This is great news. Yet another reson to love Dropbox.

By the way I have explained in short post how I use Dropbox to stay productive while working on my projects: http://www.alishabdar.com/2009

August 30, 2009

They let zumodrive

James Deane
August 31, 2009

You 'choose' what you want to store offline in the app, everything else is downloaded when tapped from what I understand so this is a non-issue.

August 31, 2009

Sorry to think submitting a prospectively very promising app could be a nerve-wracking endaevor. Anyhow, may the Steve Jobs be with you. If not, my reasons for switching to Android of the Pre would increase tenfold.

August 31, 2009

Yes, Yes! Android!

August 31, 2009

What about a Blackberry version?

I know is not as “cool” as the iPhone, but it has a good customer base using it and hey, there is no need to wait and hope Mr. Jobs' crew allows you to distribute!

Plus, mostly business users, that means, lots of potentially payers for your extra space online! (I am one of your current paying customers)

September 1, 2009

And what about Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard update? :)

September 1, 2009

++ on the text-editing-capability-question. with this app, will you be able to edit text files?

September 2, 2009

Go on this way guys! You rock!!

Douglas Neiner
September 2, 2009

Hope this gets approved soon… can't wait!

Samuel Lavoie
September 3, 2009

yes can't wait for it to be approved by the Apple team! ^_^

September 3, 2009

What about sending a file through email as AN ATTACHMENT?

There are more and more systems that can receive an attachment, strip it out and do something with it.

For example, sending a file as an attachment to Google Docs can strip out the attachment and upload it into Google Docs.

Or, sending a file as an attachment to my Kindle device will upload the document into my Kindle.

A link in an email doesn't allow any of those tools to work. I was waiting to see if DropBox iPhone App would have that function because iDisk doesn't.

Any thoughts?

September 3, 2009

I'm so excited I almost pee'd myself.

September 4, 2009

Have you gotten a email from apple yet?

September 5, 2009

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for an iPhone app. Dropbox is simply amazing. Don't know how I ever lived without it.

September 6, 2009

Dropbox team,

Could you please give us an update.

September 6, 2009

Pretty, pretty please?

September 7, 2009

I've never thought of that before, but it sounds like a good idea.

September 8, 2009

Any word yet?

It's been a while.

Stupid Apple.

September 8, 2009

Last week only 7 Apps (or Update) were approved.. themes like there coming some changes in the app store tomorrow.

September 8, 2009

it's a great news, I did a pre review in French about DropBox.app in SOSiPhone's blog

=> http://www.sosiphone.com/blogi

I hope we can have an announcement soon for download from App Store.

Cheers !

September 10, 2009

do you have news about publishing applications in the AppStore

September 12, 2009

Android app, please, please, please!!

September 15, 2009

I can't wait anymore. What's the status???

September 15, 2009

Looks like the link in the above email is going to expire before the app makes it through the approval process. Sorry to see this take so long.

September 16, 2009

The wait is getting ridiculous…

September 16, 2009

I can't help but wonder if the app got rejected and re-submitted? It's been much longer than the average 1.5-2 weeks it takes me to get an app approved, if Apple doesn't request changes…

September 16, 2009

Really looking forward to this, is there any news yet?

Also, feature wise I hope it will be possible to select folders to sync rather than just indevidual files. It will be really cool to have a whole folder of important docs and media allways cached on my iPhone.

September 17, 2009

I'm also really looking forward to this….

and I also add, please, please for editing plain text documents. Other documents would be nice as well, but even txt docs would be VERY useful.

September 17, 2009

Text editing would make Dropbox perfect. And I mean perfect, like in an all-round solution to everything. world peace, etc. Please do it.

September 17, 2009

cant wait. come on apple. Hurry up………!!!!!! ARRRGGHHHHH!!!!!!

Karthik T
September 18, 2009

Is there gonna be a symbian app for dropbox(or does anyone know similar service for said OS?)

September 18, 2009

Wow this wait is frustrating. I've been doing a search on dropbox in itunes for weeks now waiting for the application to be released. Even more frustrating is that for the longest time I only got one result from my itunes dropbox search which was an application called ZumoDrive. Yesterday a new application showed up in the result called SugarSync. So obviously they are approving applications.

September 19, 2009

Plain text editing in a Dropbox for iPhone would simplify my workflow soooo much.

I write reports of what I changed at customer sites after each appointment. I keep them in my dropbox so I can reference them on the go.

Creating / editing them on the fly in that same directory would make waiting for the train afterwards so much more productive for me.

September 21, 2009

One more voice for an Android app. From a paying customer. :)

September 22, 2009

Guys where is the App? Apple really sucks when it comes to approving great apps! Can't wait for this. I love Dropbox!

September 22, 2009

Yeah, what's the deal here? I've watched 2 other apps post to their blog that their apps were submitted after yours and they've both been accepted and on my iPhone for over a week now. I know Apple's review process is tedious, but it sounds like there was something wrong with the submission, since I'm sure the app itself would be allowed (I mean, after all, SugarSync and ZumoDrive have both been on there for a long time…)

September 22, 2009

@eric Yes. Even more frustrating is that other large apps that were submitted after Dropbox, but were well publicized, got approved right away. Cough… Rhapsody… cough..

September 23, 2009

It has been over a month now? Seriously, apple is ridiculous. You should release this through back channels so those of us with jailbroken iphones can stop waiting for apple.

September 23, 2009

Hey Dropbox staff, can you do me a favor real fast, can you please check your “Sent Items” and make sure your request actually went out. Maybe it's actually hung in someone email client and no one actually sent the request. Just a thought :-)

COME ON APPLE! Your iDisk app is safe. I am sure the drones who feel they need to pay $99 a year for your crappy MobileMe service will never figure out how much cooler (and cheaper) Dropbox is. You have nothing to worry about. Just hit that “APPROVE” button and get on with it.

Matter of fact I'll tell ya what Apple, you approve Dropbox this week and I will sign up for a Family Pack MobileMe account just to show my appreciation.

September 24, 2009

+1 for android

September 24, 2009

Hey, Dropbox, you’re being just as opaque as Apple… what’s the status?? I’m positive you would have heard from Apple and had to re-submit by now, there’s no way it’s still sitting on the “to-do” list there. I’ve submitted apps before, it doesn’t take that long.

Did your app crash too much? Have the wrong ratings? Security hole? Memory leak? Plagiarize Apple icons? I would say Apple denied it for being too close to iDisk (which would be ridiculous), but they’ve approved MANY other cloud / server-based file access apps, so I’m sure it’s not the case.

Why can’t someone at dropbox comment on this?

vince baskerville
September 24, 2009

Granted they haven't 'followed up' with this post… but they have posted about this on twitter { http://twitter.com/Dropbox/sta… }

I'd rather them keep up the awesome work with what their doing, and post various updates via twitter than try to follow every blog reply.. (if they had to choose)

September 24, 2009

Still no news from Apple?

That's really frustrating :(

Oscar Karlsten
September 24, 2009

Guys, it sounds & look absolutely fantastic. Really looking forward to this app! When will the wait be over?

September 25, 2009

Do you know about the people behind the check prozess by apple?

In germany we called them “appstorezwerge”! in english -> “AppStoreDwarves”??

I'll wish us the best…

September 26, 2009

Hi guys, Will we be able to attach a dropbox stored file into a mail? There's currently an app that does this, it is called OneDisk, it supports Box.net account but I couldn't make it work for DropBox.

Kevin Carson
September 29, 2009

Wow. It's been more than a month now. This is ridiculous.

September 29, 2009

Hey everyone. I figured out what happened by reading the TechCrunch article about DropBox's 2 million users mark.

“Dropbox submitted its iPhone application in the middle of August. It still has not been approved. According to CEO Drew Houston, Apple rejected the application two weeks after submitting to the App Store, but since then they have fixed all the bugs, and re-submitted the app.”

Since it normally takes 7-14 days to get an app response (from my experience), it all depends how long it took the folks to get the bugs fixed before re-submitting. Assuming it took them under a week to fix everything (with a rejection date of around Sep 10th), the app would most likely appear this week! Otherwise, I can't imagine it will be later than next week, unless there were some pretty hefty bugs.

September 29, 2009

Great catch, well that some information at less. I don't know Dropbox Team, maybe a little shout out to your loyal customers letting us know what is up instead of us sitting on this thread for weeks b***hing about Apple. A little communication can go a long way in situations like this.

September 29, 2009

Its out !!!

September 29, 2009

Only for OS 3.1? BAD!!!

September 29, 2009

Thank yoooouuuuuu!!!

September 29, 2009

Help, I can get dropbox on both of my computers.

I downloaded the App for my new iphone 3gs, but my files will not open.

It reads unable to read file.

July 18, 2010

After you got the movie/video file.

Convert it using DVD catalyst 3. (globalsettings->Conversion) Mark “Enable streaming for Mp4 files”. (Globalsettings->Border) Choose “Fullscreen Stretch” (Also choose your mobile device… There's a lot to choose from).

When the conversation is done, just upload it to dropbox and enter dropbox from device… Now it should stream with a full screen & high quality video.

–XXXXX—–Please register with the link above, this will give both me and you exktra online storage———–XXXXX–

We prefer to honor a lot of other internet web-sites on the web, even though they aren’t linked to us, by linking to them. Below are some webpages worth checking out….
