Dropbox around the world!

Posted by Jon Ying on February 16, 2010

Hi everyone!

Hope February is treating all of you well. We’ve recently hit a huge milestone and now have over 4 million Dropbox users. The coolest part is that this crowd of millions is pretty diverse and encompasses a huge range of nationalities. We like to think that this is because we’ve created something that extends beyond language barriers– It can be used by pretty much anyone.

I’d like to share some stats with you all. These were thrown together by our analytics pro, Albert, and it gives a pretty cool breakdown of our user population.

Users by nationality:

32.7% USA
6.7% UK
6.5% Germany
4.7% Japan
4.0% Canada
3.5% Spain
3.2% Netherlands
2.8% China
2.7% France
2.5% Italy

Users by platform:

66.1% Windows only
20.9% Mac only
2.0% Linux only
7.4% Windows and Mac
2.6% Windows and Linux
0.3% Mac and Linux
0.7% All three

Just a friendly reminder: We’re not spying into your account. This data is based off your IP address.

As an added bonus, here’s a video (by Rajiv) of 25 seconds of Dropbox client traffic. This video is generated from live data streaming off our servers. Each dot corresponds to activity from a client, with higher towers representing more users from a particular place.  Pretty cool, huh?

You mean “United Kingdom”, and not just “England”.. right?

With almost 20% of your users in Europe, when do we see speeds improvements in Europe?

February 16, 2010

Congrats guys! It's no surprise, the product is just too good.

I have a client who has Dropbox installed at all their offices, including one in Iran. All the reports, excel databases, etc etc are sync'd back to the home account. I haven't heard a complain yet.

Brilliant!

nice video, but i'm guessing GEO IP data you are using is some what wrong.
At least for Portugal its using the location of main backbones and not user location.

How are you counting the multi boot?
is it the type of machines, or the the number of machines in an account?

Linux users might be the minority but we're the most influential and awesome..don't let these numbers fool you into thinking Linux doesn't matter :)

The disproportionate amount of Americans and Mac users shows that your main focus was on one very specific audience. E.g. keeping a worldwide audience in mind, the expensive iphone is almost negligible compared to other, mostly wm based mobile devices, yet you chose to support it exclusively. Also, no translations planned.

Is Dropbox going to become more open in the future and expand, or are you just going to narrow your focus even more in an attempt to get paying subcribers?

That's sick. Dropbox is pretty much my favourite new product of the last year, has saved my life many times, eliminated my use of stupid flash drives and is now saving many of my friends and family's lives! Keep it up. :-)

Are iPhone users tracked? Or are we shoved in with those weird Mac users? :-p
I use my dropbox as a connector between one of my Live Mesh folders and my iPhone (dropbox iPhone app).
Whatever I update on one of my mesh computers is synced to my server's mesh folder which is then synced to dropbox which I can then access on my phone.
Works VERY well! ;-]

For people interested, here are some more numbers:

http://www.w3schools.com/brows
Internet OS usage:
Windows: 11.3+15.4+1.4+59.4+0.6 = 88.1%
Linux: 4.6%
Mac: 6.8%

http://www.internetworldstats….
Total internet users: 1733993741
Windows: 1733993741/100*88.1 = 1527648490
Linux: 1733993741/100*4.6 = 79763712.1
Mac: 1733993741/100*6.8 = 117911574

http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=339
Dropbox OS usage:
Windows: 66.1+7.4+2.6+0.7 = 76.8%
Linux: 2.0+2.6+0.3+0.7 = 5.6%
Mac: 20.9+7.4+0.3+0.7 = 29.3%

Total dropbox users: 4000000
Dropbox users per OS:
Windows: 4000000/100*76.8 = 3072000
Linux: 4000000/100*5.6 = 224000
Mac: 4000000/100*29.3 = 1172000

Percentage of Dropbox users of all internet users:
4000000*100/1733993741 = 0.23068134%

Percentage of Dropbox users per OS:
Windows: 3072000*100/1527648490 = 0.201093381%
Linux: 224000*100/79763712.1 = 0.280829458%
Mac: 1172000*100/117911574 = 0.99396519%

These are the facts, scientifically proven ofc.
If we can presume that all dropbox users are cool and all cool people use dropbox, which is known by all, we can conclude that on average Mac users are the coolest.
(I'm no Mac user :'()

Not Open Source, and it wants to reboot LINUX? WTF man? Why do you need to mod my kernel? 2GB limit unless you pay? Why are you afraid to put that information out right up front? Now I have to dig your piece of shit software out of my computer. Thanks.

Love my Dropbox. Waiting with bated breath for the Android client. I use Dropbox across 3 different computers and its nice to have them all there knowing that any of the other 2 machines will always be up to date. I don't feel locked down to any one computer, no matter if its my Mac laptop, my gaming laptop or my netbook. Its all there! Thanks so much guys and gals!

Is there any news about an iPad version of dropbox in the appstore?
given the fact that iPad doesn't has its own file system app, i believe that is an incredible opportunity for you guys, to take the front and be the firsts to offer a free(or not) service with a full feature app for iPad that could cover this missing feature inside the iPhone OS.
could increases dropbox's market share a lot.

Rajiv Eranki
July 19, 2010

hi nvquanghuy,

i wrote the program to generate the image as a side project one afternoon using a few different technologies:

- opengl
- geoip
- objective-c
- inotail, awk, sed, ssh
- a mapped image of the earth i found on google images
- the wikipedia page for spherical coordinates and a large number of trial-and-errors to get it oriented right with the view matrix ;-)

kkk, you dont understood what is DropBox… With DropBox I can work in a 30mb autocad file, in my HD, and 10 seconds after I save a change, another engineer in another country can open the file… in their own HD!!! Without clicks, manual uploads, mails… And the old versions of the file stays on the DropBox server!
The only problem is that not exist a read only status…

Dropbox makes keeping all my uni, work, training and other files together so much easier and means I can access them from anywhere in the world. Not to mention just being able to put stuff in the public folder and email out the link out for others to use.

Keep up the Great Work, and get the word out at Universities about your site, Everyone I have told about DropBox has loved it.

Just beneath, are many entirely not associated internet sites to ours, even so, they’re certainly really worth going over….
