Moving right along

Posted by Jon Ying on April 22, 2010

Hey everyone,

We’ve moved! After two years of working in our first office, it was finally time to move into a place that could better fit the 22 people we’ve added since then :).

Here are a few pictures of our old shack (we were clearly in need of breathing room).

and now, our new crib! Awwww yeeah.

We’ll be sure to post more pics once our furniture gets in!

Speaking of adding new people, we’d like to welcome Tom Meyer (dedicated Android developer), Dan Wheeler (multi-team handyman) and Tom Hoover (client team member) to the Dropbox team as full-timers!

Our office isn’t the only thing that’s moved at Dropbox– we have a smorgasbord of features that are currently rapidly moving forward in development:

As many of you forum-goers probably know, selective sync is the hottest topic on Dropbox’s horizon, and we’re almost ready to show it to you all. Selective sync gives you the ability to choose which folders in your Dropbox get sync’d to which computers. This would, for example, let you choose to not sync your giant music library down to your netbook’s tiny hard drive. (By the way, do any of you have a better name for ‘selective sync’?)

Our mobile apps are also getting close to the finish line. I’ll probably be beaten to death if I give out any more details or info, so just take my word for it when I say that both apps are very awesome, and that you’ll be very happy with what the mobile team has thrown together.

That aside, there are a few more features under the radar that are guaranteed to make May a ridiculous month ;)

Hope you’re all having a wonderful spring/autumn!

What about partial sync? I think selective sync already is good, it is a nice rememberable name :)

Not exactly sexy, but prefer 'custom sync' to 'selective sync'

April 22, 2010

Better than selective sync:

cel-sync (cel-ective, ahaha)
SELective (in any diction you prefer)
iSync (just kidding)
joysync (derived from choice, somehow at least)
s-elect

Hope you get your webby, I like your service a lot…

Selective Sync is what 'many' (referring to dropbox_downfall) have been dreaming about! You can`t just change the name after months of waiting for it :P

Resource forks do work with the latest Beta, 0.8.32. http://forums.dropbox.com/topi

Though, there's no guaranteeing that that feature will work when the next stable release comes out. Which is a possibility as 0.8.32 does not have selective sync.

What exactly is intelligent about this feature? Is it choosing your sync? Its selective, flexible, maybe flex sync

Michael A.
April 23, 2010

Selective sync (which sounds great, yay for alliteration) is just what I need to share certain folders between home and work; this means I will be able to get rid of my separate work account which I created just to share a folder with.

There are some good name suggestions here already but I don't think any of them beat Selective Sync. I like “Pick Sync” and “Sync Choice”, or maybe something involving the word “zone,” as in, “only certain zones of my Dropbox sync with my computer at work.”

Since we're talking about software and not washing machines, I'd steer away from cheesy names TurboBoost or SuperDry to describe a simple feature.

Selective Sync is good

April 23, 2010

synclastic. It's a real word too, check if you don't believe me ;-)

SyncElastic might work better to reflect the flexibility though, or “idiosyncrasy” which fits as it means “behavioral attribute that is distinctive and peculiar to an individual”.

I'll swap any of the above for a tshirt kplzthx ;-)

April 23, 2010

Yes, Selective Sync is ready for prime time. Other needies, ANDROID APP. I have been crying about it for over a year (http://dropbox.disqus.com/ipho… You guys have to know that android is coming like a freight train as you finally have a developer for it, although I am happy for this. Right now I have to use a clone called droidbox, which actually works nicely. Maybe you guys should just buy them out and make continuous improvements on it. I also suggested a dropbox app for facebook over a year ago (see: http://forums.dropbox.com/topi… It would be sweet if you guys integrated facebook connect so I could share files with friends on facebook, it would also probably make your user base sky rocket. You should also get the web interface working with HTML 5 file API so I can just drag and drop files from my desktop into the web interface.

Keep up the good work guys, a high five for having a linux client for over a year now!

Selective Sync is fine, as others suggested, the SelectSync variant is even better. I was just thinking about KitchenSync (too bad the domain is already being squatted). I guess KitchenSync would be for the default syncing, perhaps offshoots of that could be used for the Selective Sync feature?

Would love to see a WinMo app. One of the reasons why I've been using Live Mesh for so long.

“Selective Sync” is a very “usable” name IMO. It doesn't need any translation or leaps of analysis or creativity to understand exactly what it means in the context of Dropbox's universe. When you click on the term you know exactly what you want and where you're going to end up. Just with those two words, you understand that you'll be able to “select” what you're “syncing” and because we're talking dropbox, the obvious assumption is that it means that things stay on the server but you can choose which machines each folder or subfolder goes to. At least that's how quickly I understood it!

Suggestion for name: JumpSync
(Jumps “over”..)

Let me say I've just migrated from Live Mesh to Dropbox. I've used Live Mesh for a long time since 1st Beta relase but believe MS has missed the boat on this one, the ship is now at sea and Dropbox made the crossing!!!

I do have ONLY 1 feature though that Live Mesh have that could make Dropbox the killer APP… Peer-to-Peer Synch!
Let me explain: Having 1TB of music and movies I share between my 3 devices at home I do not require all this to be in the cloud, 1st because of not wanting to synch this across restricted bandwidth and secondly due to the time. So I used the Live Mesh Peer-to-Peer feature to do this for me, keeping picture, movie and music libraries in synch and copies on the 3 devices acts as backup. Thus no need to traverse the Internet etc. I Understand LAN synch is similar but not the same as this still requires an original on the “Cloud” side of Dropbox. Enabling the folder to only synch local LAN side and no synch across the Internet will kill the competition!

Finally, iPhone and iPad APP ROCKS!!!
