Schoolbox

Posted by Jon Ying on September 06, 2011

Hey everyone!

September is here! For some people, this means it’s time to head back to school. But not to worry! Dropbox is one school supply that might make this coming semester a bit easier. Dropbox gives all school-goers double referral credit, which means 500MB per invite for all free users (and 1GB per invite for all paying users)! This includes people you’ve already invited too. To learn more, visit our edu info page.

Here are a few stories of how Dropbox has helped students and teachers out:

One time I was up until 2AM writing an English paper. Right as I finished, I fell asleep (without setting an alarm…). I woke up half an hour late and ran out the door. As I entered the class, I remembered my mistake of not printing out my paper! I thought I was going to fail the biggest test of the semester. Luckily, you people at Dropbox had my back. I pulled up Dropbox on my phone to show the teacher my essay, downloaded it, and printed the essay. I made a 95 thanks to Dropbox! I don’t think I’ve ever loved any piece of software this much.

This year, my robotics team (http:// www.waltonrobotics.org) decided that we wanted to completely model our robot in CAD. We spent weeks looking around for a good file sharing and syncing method to easily share important files among members of the team. I had been using Dropbox for a while since then, and we had yet to find anything else suitable, so I brought up the idea of using it for the team. We all signed up for accounts (using my referral link, of course! :p) and started uploading files. As soon as we tried it, it just worked.

I’ve been using Dropbox to organize and sync all of my law school documents, notes, and projects across my laptop, desktop, and android phone. When collaborative projects have come up, Dropbox has made the back and forth of editing our projects much more streamlined. Dropbox has already saved me once this semester, when I arrived at the law school intending to print out my paper (which was due in 10 minutes) and discovered my laptop battery was dead. No sweat, I simply logged onto the dropbox website from one of the school’s public computers and printed it from there.

I’m having the students submit rough drafts to me via Dropbox. I’m able to quickly access their work, comment on it, and get it back to them. Why not just email? Well, I hate opening attachments. I think attachments are a thing of the past! Dropbox is the future! I’m sure you can tell that I am smitten with Dropbox. I love it so much. If I weren’t already married, and if Dropbox was a person, I’d marry it!

Dropbox is the best, whenever anyone needs any help, we can easily share our work between each other using shared folders so that you can work in teams and get idea from your classmates work!

And one and a half month, two support tickets and two edu form submits later, there is still no way to get the .edu bonus for EMLyon students. I've got a @edu.em-lyon.com email address, why is it so difficult?

I've been something like 90% paperless my entire academic career. Obstinate teachers aside, I've been able to use a combination of an iPad, CocoaBox's Penultimate App, and Dropbox to coordinate and keep on top of all my school work. Dropbox is an excellent tool for not only synchronization (I forget alarms, too :P) but also for backups. A few times I've had my Mac/iPad crash on me, and every time my homework, projects, and notes live on in the Dropbox cloud! :)

Don't get me wrong, I like Dropbox.  But it would be nice if the .edu feature actually worked.  I've tried numerous times over the last 3 years to no avail.  I have a valid .edu email address, and have checked my inbox and spam folders numerous times. Yet I still have yet to receive the validation email even though every time I enter my email, the webpage reports that the email has been sent.

At the moment you just support Highschool, not really normal school for everybody, because in germany you dont get an edu adress, the online official thing could be a identity card scan from the school you go to

Hey Dropbox – your total lifesaver, I can't imagine having to cope with USB sticks again! But don't forget us about us in the UK!

Sad to see that you only support .edu Domains and verified Institutions. In Austria, schools only offer eMail-accounts for teachers, not students — We use our Gmail accounts to share files for school via Dropbox :( … A great idea, but a very poor realization. Please take this as constructive criticism. It doesn't mean that I don't think Dropbox is amazing, but I am a little disappointed.

Dropbox makes working with my graduate assistant easier. I've got huge files that the email servers don't like. Dropbox allows me to have her edit and review files without the hassle of email.

Oh, why the .edu? You do quit the school at some recent time, so I set up my account on my regular, private gmail.
I don´t want to loose my dropbox account because my uni-mail isn´t valid after I quit my programme!

This is not thought through properly…Really, dropbox…

I do short courses at differend universities here in Sweden, so I think you should go by the student license instead…

I´m also a teacher, and taking a Masters degree at a University , so I endorse the dropbox to all my students, colleauges and “classmates”…

If it's possible, please make it an option for universities to apply in order for their emails to be recognized . Universities in Greece use their own domains – mine for example uses the @dias.aueb.gr one (Athens University of Economics and Business)

You can make a dropbox account at any email address and then verify your student address later. For example, I setup mine using my personal email, went to this link after it was set up https://www.dropbox.com/edu, punched in my .edu address, and clicked the link in the confirmation email they sent to my .edu. Voila! All of my referrals are worth double! (Yes, it is retroactive)

Northumbria Students' Union Raise And Give, the student fundraising group based at Northumbria University use Dropbox to manage every aspect of what they do (aside from network hosting for the DB – though that does get backed up to Dropbox, even whilst in use)!

It's the storage bank for the design templates, logos, and branding. It's the image repository for the photos from all our events. It's the filing system for the policies and procedures.
Essentially, we use it like we would a local network shared documents drive – except on a global scale. This summer has seen RAG Committee members in the USA, Kenya, Budapest, India, Prague and Sri Lanka – and nobody has been left out, because they've always had access to Dropbox, be it from their laptop, mobile, desktop or somebody else's web-browser.As well as the Committee, the Dropbox is accessed the the SU's Activities Team, Activities Manager, and Vice-Presidents (executive officers) to keep up-to-date with us and add in useful bits of information for us.

So, from NSU RAG, we'd like to say a big thank-you to Dropbox!

I'm a lecturer and use dropbox so I can work on my lectures at home, on my laptop on the train and at work and only have one version. Before Dropbox I either had to carry everything on a USB stick or else the version I wanted was always where I wasn't. Also love being able to share files with colleagues in shared folders. We can both work on the work in the folders and saves us having to email each other multiple versions. I LOVE Dropbox!

Andi

Miguel Rodrigues
September 6, 2011

I can't complain, my college address isn't .edu and it was recognized (luckily, I guess). Dropbbox has made my life easier when it comes to share my school projects between machines, not to mention backing it up. Total life saver.

September 7, 2011

Unfortunatly, no. :( I'm a but upset too. But, it makes sense. They would have no way to verify it, and if they did, 99% of people went to high school at some point, so everyone would get the bonus, and it would no longer be a bonus.I'm more than willing to wait though :)
