Dropbox for Android, 2.0!

Posted by Android Team on December 22, 2011

We’re really excited to announce version 2.0 of our Android app! It’s completely redesigned and includes a ton of new features!

Some highlights of this release:

  • Favorites: Want to make sure a file is always on your phone? Star it for quick offline access.
  • Bulk upload: No need to upload files one at a time. Select multiple photos and videos to be uploaded in the background.
  • File renaming: Simple as it sounds – files and folders can now be renamed.
  • Ice Cream Sandwich support: Optimized for the newest and tastiest Android release yet: Ice Cream Sandwich.
  • Single-tap access to actions: All file and folder actions are available from a single tap.
  • Lots of others: Improved gallery view, export to (and upload from) local storage, as well as numerous bug fixes and stability improvements

Thanks to all of our forum users who helped us test the build earlier this week.

Download the Dropbox 2.0 app from the Android Market.

While you’re waiting, check out the eye candy below!

Federal regulations require me to warn you that this app… is looking pretty good.

December 23, 2011

It sucks to be honest. No more mnt/dropbox folder for files, no more
long press download and if you want to download something you are forced
to do an export and select a folder EACH TIME :(

If only they
had kept long press downloading, and given the users the option to
specify a standard folder to download to, rather then making people
choose all the time. I mean have it two way, Long press downloading goes
to the standard folder that you set, if you want to download something
to another folder then you use export. I mean that works and wouldnt
mess up a lot of people's stuff.

AND BE WARNED: Updating the app clears your entire dropbox folder on the phone….. Just a word of warning

December 23, 2011

so you still have mnt/dropbox and it contains all the files it did before you updated?. If thats the case then something went wrong cause this new update is supposed to clear it because they changed how it all works….

December 23, 2011

It's looking pretty good.
A 'bulk download' would have been great!

December 23, 2011

WP7? When?

December 23, 2011

Where is my /mnt/dropbox folder? Where is the long press download? Why changing that, are you insane? Perhaps you will drop the “storing data in the cloud” feature with the next update?

December 23, 2011

PLEASE give a WP7 app. please.

December 23, 2011

Wh*t th* f*ck!
sry guys you can't make an update clear AN ENTIRE PART OF A USER'S FILESYSTEM!?
You don't even want to imagine how long it takes to get these gigabytes of files back to my phone!
And now that i want to get the files back, i can't even download them automatically by longpress->download!?&/§”$*
This is like updating to Windows 8 and AFTERWARDS getting the message “dear user, for better experience windows doesn't support keyboard input anymore!”
i'm seriously disappointed, reenable this asap!

December 23, 2011

Great to see development on the Android version. Now we have the favorite feature as well!

But why did you change the default location of the local storage? Was there any technical requirement to do this? As others pointed out, changing the /sdcard/dropbox location is a real fail. The new location of the cached files is so far hidden in the filesystem, there is no normal way to enter the name of such a document in any app.

If I had known about this MAJOR change that is NOT mentioned in ANY release note, I would not have updated to the new release!!!

So please make the location of the cached file configurable and you keep the power users happy. And most likely a lot of mobile users are power users, otherwise they wouldn't have a need to use Dropbox on their phone!

December 23, 2011

The UI looks better but functionality wise the new version has gone backwards. What
happened to long press to download a file. Why is the download now
called “export” and why do I have to choose a folder every time I want
to download a file to my device.  Wiping out my existing filesystem is a big no-no.

Can we pls have a download option same as the old version

December 23, 2011

How can I downgrade? Can't even see which files have already been downloaded. Files are saved in an awkward location, etc…

Shen Feng
December 24, 2011

Update version's GUI is better than old Dropbox.Good update, but it also haven't auto sync function like to pc version.I don't know why doesn't update this function.

December 24, 2011

Alright! I'm glad I wasn't the oonly one who freaked out. I'm like “WOW! I might as well use Box.net they gave me 50GB of inaccessable storage why would I use my 3GB of inaccessable storage on Dropkick now?” My /dropbox folder disappearing pissed me off and I downgraded from a backup apk I have.

Akshara T G
December 24, 2011

What happened to my previous Dropbox download folder??!!!

The download location is hard-coded to some where deep inside the file system.

Please provide the option to set the download directory.

December 24, 2011

Can you guys fix the web site in chrome so it doesn't automatically move folders when you hover over them?  Android is awesome and everything but thats my biggest annoyance with dropbox right now

Graham Matthews
December 24, 2011

This is awesome! I'm lovin' it!!

Ewan Lindley
December 24, 2011

This is absolutely abysmal. You have done the opposite of what you should in an update and instead of streamlining and simplifying the app while adding functionality you have removed features and complicated the entire thing. Sort this out as soon as because thanks to your complete wipe of my file system so many things on my phone have stopped working.

December 24, 2011

One question, where the hell is Download option? UI usually doesn't mean a thing to me if a app does it job but regressions in core functionality with UI update are not acceptable.

December 24, 2011

Before 2.0, I could open .mm files from with dropbox. Mindjet was the app.

After 2.0, dropbox tells me that there is no app for .mm files.

Please fix asap. If this doesn't work, then I have to drop dropbox.

December 24, 2011

Does anyone know how to access that location on an unrooted device? In Astro, the /Android folder doesn't appear although I can access it on a PC when the phone is plugged in and drive mounted.

December 26, 2011

December 26, 2011

Nice update for android. But I miss the tick sign(when finished downloading) when downloading or exporting the file to my android…which was available with older version. Moreover it would be to set default folder option in settings…

December 26, 2011

The new release may look pretty, but it has certainly alienated a lot of loyal Dropbox power users such as myself.
Good points;1. FavouritesBad points;1. Having an update that deletes an existing directory structure without warning is VERY POOR!

2. Having the Dropbox folder in a weird location with a very long path name that includes 'scratch' is very unintuitive and not user friendly. It is now a real pain to specify such a long path when I want to edit files that I keep in my Dropbox, unless I  open files from within the Dropbox application. For example, if I want to open a Dropbox file from with ThinkFree (or any other application), I have to navigate through 6 directory levels to get to the root of my Dropbox, instead of 1 in the previous version.Opening files from within Dropbox is not always an option, as that sometimes changes the behaviour of some applications. For example, if I open a .CSV file with ThinkFree Office from within Dropbox, I have to exit if I want to create a new ThinkFree file.3. Whilst the ability to export a file from Dropbox may be useful, it seems to have come at the cost of being able to force a download (i.e., to make the local copy fresh), unless the file is marked as a favourite, in which case it is always refreshed. This can result in unnecessary bandwidth usage for large files which may be regularly updated on other machines, but only occasionally need to be updated on the Android phone. For now, the work around is to mark as favourite, then un-mark as favourite, although that then removes any icon indicating whether I have the latest version (i.e., no green tick as with the previous version).Nice to have; One more thing that would be nice to have, as an extension of the Favourites concept, would be to have the ability to mark an entire folder as a Favourite, so that all files in that folder are always kept up to date on the mobile device without having to mark each file. For example, I have a folder that I regularly add files to from my PC, but need an offline copy of each file on my phone (for when I have no network access). Whenever I add a file on the PC, I need to remember to go to my phone and tick each new file as a Favourite.

December 26, 2011

Why did my post lose all the line breaks?

December 27, 2011

Total Fail!

I can't believe how badly you guys did on this. I have two 50GB accounts and am thinking of moving them elsewhere. Fix it NOW!

Deleting Data Is Bad
December 27, 2011

Your update broke every app on my phone. Switching to DropSync.

December 27, 2011

It sure would be great if Dropbox had the decency to respond to this huge issue… I've always loved and used dropbox, but this is really bad. Maybe time to start using those 50GB at Box instead?

December 27, 2011

This app is so agressive in starting and using precious memory when it is doing nothing that it's becoming very annoying.

If you're going to have an easy upload feature, let it be automatic or have some sorting method to it. The feature seems nice; until you have 3000+ photos on your phone.

The memory issue is so big, that we're looking into other means of sharing info even though we're all premium 100 or team members – the app is just that bad.

what about link to a folder by zip file in the desktop product?

Please stop starting the Dropbox app every time the phone is unlocked! That is, remove the unnecessary broadcast receiver for USER_PRESENT.

Karan Lugani
December 27, 2011

The new update seems to make Drop Box fast. Quick updates and faster uploads. Great tweak.

December 27, 2011

Have to admit that I am very surprised that such a badly thought-out 'upgrade' should be released. While admitting that some of the new features are good, they are utterly outweighed by the problems. It is inexcusable to change the local storage location (and delete the old one!!!) without warning. This broke apps everywhere.
Also, where is the download status gone? And why it it running when I'm not using it? Battery life is noticeably impacted.
Overall, I consider this update a huge fail. I have rolled back to the previous excllent version. Thankfully I had the .apk
The market reviews say it all!

December 27, 2011

Uh where did my dropbox folder go, unacceptable with no notification. I will be looking for other alternatives.

Brandon King
December 28, 2011

I'm a little confused with the point of a favorite section.  If I select a file to download to my device, and it's there in a folder.  Why then would I need to 'fav' the file to make sure it stays on said device?  Is DropBox deleting files at random?

From using the new update I find things harder to download.  Of all the things a person would want, why can't I select multiple files for download, or download an entire folder of goodies?  Why not allow me to select a download location other than the default mystery zone 2.0 sticks things?

December 30, 2011

bad update, removing folder NOT a good idea. Many people rely on file and folder shortcuts

December 30, 2011

This update is a total failure. :(
All my downloaded files are gone, the new folder location is just ridiculous, it's now impossible to use my files offline.

Why are you going this way at all – pumping up this complicated UI, but without implementing the core functionality? Why don't just do the same as on the desktop – simply provide a working mechanism to have a transparent access to the files in user's Dropbox, keeping them synchronized? Have a look at the Dropsync – that is exactly what Dropbox on a mobile device should be: just download all the files (or selected folders) to the device, and upload them back when they are modified.

The old version was already more or less usable. It was missing just a couple of features: an ability to download a whole folder, and automatic uploading of the changed files (a simple check of the downloaded files modification time on the application startup would work). That's it! An update with just these two functions would definitely make most of the users happy!

December 30, 2011

Can you tell me how to roll back to the previous version?

December 30, 2011

I will not update until another version is posted addressing all of the customer complaints. Please, somebody from the Dropbox team, post something in the blog letting us know you hear us.

I hate the new Android app; I have uninstalled it and re-installed the previous version. My number one hate was the fact that you deleted the Dropbox directory on my phone since I had entered paths to certain file into the settings of other apps. It wasn't till I got here and read other people's comments that I discovered there still was a Dropbox directory on my device somewhere.

My number two hate was the fact that Dropbox is insisting on handing off my files to what it deems to be an appropriate app. My biggest reason for having Dropbox on my phone is to have mobile access to an encrypted file holding all my passwords. It is *.kdb file that I open with KeePassX. However when I went to favorite my password file in the Dropbox app, I kept getting a message that there was no app on my phone capable of dealing with it. Naturally there was, but Dropbox didn't know about it. I have no idea whether Dropbox downloaded it anyway since I didn't know where the folder was to access it from KeePassX. And yes, having a mulit-level directory structure plays badly with my other mobile apps. Formerly I had entered the path to my passwords file in KeePassX which stored the path for future use. I don't want to have to type in a path of great depth into the settings of other apps.

I didn't realize that the new Dropbox app ran continually either. That's also a huge downside. My phone is a low-end Android phone with very little memory. I don't want an app that I use only occasionally to be running all the time wasting my phone's few resources.

Apk Crack Download
December 31, 2011

waoo.. this is really a cool app in the android market now.

December 31, 2011

The app doesn't work at all.
I'm using a AT&T Galaxy SII, and whenever I try to upload a photo, the app force closes. I also cannot upload anything from within another app, because the dropbox app will not respond and never attempts to upload my images.

December 31, 2011

You did both. A Nice job and a terrible one. It's not possible to export more then one file at once. Killing the original dropbox folder is not very nice. And the 2.0 app is to aggressive. It's a bit pity for such a nice concept.

Kevin Gaughan
December 31, 2011

Arghh. Your update deleted the old dropbox folder on my phone and I lost several important files.

I don't understand why you had to move the local dropbox directory anyway but what gave you the idea to delete the old one and any of the users files that were in it.

Your update caused three serious problems none of which you advertised in advance.

1. The update broke links to any programs that used the offline copy of a file stored in the old /mnt/sdcard/dropbox folder.

2. Users without constant internet access may not have realised that you had deleted the offline files until they were offline and unable to get a replacement.

3. Some users may even have modified data in the dropbox folder that hadn't been uploaded to the internet before you deleted it.

The bottom line is that you should never have deleted a user's data files without prior warning.

December 31, 2011

This is great because we use dropbox to share our files between portable devices through the office.

December 31, 2011

You need to give me back the ability to have a hard copy on my phone. Why you took this away is beyond me. You also should add check boxes and a menu system so I don't have to click every file to download it.

I removed this app from my phone because it's now easier to plug my phone in and drag the files over to it. Thanks for breaking an app that was useful.

January 1, 2012

What kind of mentally challenged monkey thought it would be acceptable to delete all the local files? He needs to be fired, today. This app took a serious downgrade in usability in more ways than one, fix it please.

Sounds like KeePassX doesn't associate *.kbd files correctly with itself in its AndroidManifest.xml file. KeePassDroid works great, and opens if I press a *.kbd file from within Dropbox.

Dropbox doesn't run all the time, but it does start itself automatically every time you unlock the screen. Who thought that was a good idea? :

I have to agree with almost all of the comments below, that is, the negative ones.
Wrong: 1) deleting folder without asking, 2) putting the new folder all the way down (just try to open a file in dropbox, save it with a new name in the default folder, and then you have to find that folder again when you want to upload it) 3) no options for only downloading a file.
Still missing: 1) Automatic uploading of changed files regardless of what was used to change it 2) monitoring if files are added to the dropbox folder (they should then of course be uploaded afterwards.

I can actually not believe this update. Anyhow, does anybody know if this is the right place to write this, or how do we get the attention of dropbox staff? They seem not to be responding at all….

January 10, 2012

thanks dropbox. love the new feature

January 11, 2012

One important feature that is no longer available in this new version, at least as far as I have been able to figure out, is the ability to create a new picture within Dropbox using the phone's camera.  Instead of taking a picture within a Dropbox folder and Dropbox automatically uploading it (one step process) we now have to take the picture and then go into Dropbox and manually upload it (three step process).

The UI is improved but this elimination of a very useful feature really ruined this app for me.

Hello, proud owner of a brand new Asus Transformer Prime and user of Dropbox for years now, I must say I'm quite disappointed by Dropbox for Android. It's my first Android tablet and I never used Dropbox for Android previous versions. I run Dropbox on my main computer (Mac Os) and on a linux netbook too. I thought I could grab easely all my files from my dropbox account on my new tablet, edit them as much as I would need to, and find my modifications on the files when I open another of my computers. Well, won't be possible, even with 64 Gbytes of space on my Prime, because Dropbox for Android don't synchronize any folder on it.

I hope your team will allow for it in the next update!

An improvement in the GUI in the new version does NOT offset the functionality lost. And what's with deleting old files and creating new Dropbox folder buried deep on the SD card (under “Scratch”), no less! Seriously – what is the reasoning behind that? It took some effort, right? So why do it?

Bring back the download option!! I used to use the download option religiously for offline reading of documents. Why would you get rid of it??? I would seriously consider moving to another service because of this. Tiny feature, but its removal is causing major inconvenience. Major.

Is there a reason why it won't show your upload speed? Maybe cause I never get over 30kB even on a 3Mbit HSPA+ upstream…even my 10Mbit home connection is PAINFULLY slow when uploading to DB, right now it was 90kBps which was surprisingly fast.

What's with the crazy permissions?  I love Dropbox, but the permissions needed to run on my partner's Android are insane.  Please explain yourself.  Dropbox doesn't need the permissions it's asking for.  What's up?  Will uninstall until permissions are revamped.

The new file layout is ridiculous.  I use it for offline files and trying to get
to them is beyond stupid.  You make a major change in file location without
asking for permission and delete what was already downloaded.  Move the storage
directory back to where it was and put back the download option.  By screwing up
the storage location and removing the download option you did more damage then
what the new features added.  Where can I get a copy of the old version?

One thing that might immediately catch the eye is the free 500MB of
storage space that is being offered by Dropbox. During the beta period,
users are being offered additional storage space, with every 500MB of
uploaded images and videos being rewarded with an additional 500MB of
storage which keeps going until you have reached 5GB. The free space is
being given out as an incentive for users to thoroughly test the new
feature which lets photographs and videos be uploaded automatically from
the camera which negates the need for any upload managers or additional

It's a decent app, but the ability to download an entire directory has been promised for a year and a half, and still nothing.  It'd be a 5 star app with this feature but is only a 2 star app now.  Such a glaring oversight.  I understand people may have data bandwidth issues, but I'm on an unlimited data plan and do a lot of work over WIFI – at least give users the option to be able to sync directories.

Please do give back the status bar and directory downloads.
