US-EU Safe Harbor Certification

Posted by Jon Ying on February 14, 2012

Hi Dropboxers,

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about whether we adhere to the US-EU Safe Harbor Framework and the US-Swiss Safe Harbor Framework. As of today, we’re happy to say that the answer is “yes.” We’ve certified that we comply with these safe harbors and updated our Privacy Policy accordingly. You can view the changes here.

During this process, we realized we could make our Privacy Policy more clear in several areas:

Referrals/Sharing: Our new Privacy Policy notes that we send out emails when you refer people to Dropbox. It also spells out that we may receive third-party information like email addresses when you share content with others or refer them to Dropbox.

Geo-location Information: In our current Privacy Policy, we let you know that photos you upload to Dropbox might contain location information recorded by your camera. We’ve updated our Privacy Policy to clarify that videos you send us might already have that information in them as well.

Third Party Websites: Our new Privacy Policy makes clear that when you click a link on the Dropbox website and visit a different site, the privacy policy for the other site may govern your activity there.

These changes will take effect on March 15, 2012, but the safe harbor protections are effective today.

I appreciate dropbox a great deal, but when I share my dropbox with someone who is new to dropbox, they automatically get a “out of space” message and told they need to buy more space.  What gives?  I have ask this privately several times, but the issue has not gone away.  Please provide me additional direction so that I can share the glory that is dropbox!

The public folder does not work. It returns a link that is not highlighted and leads to an error message on the dropbox website.
I would not pay for this service since there seems to be no way to get to a real person for help. Only contains forums that dont answer my questions.
If there is anybody reading this please send help.
The sharing function does work as it should.

The geo-location information is often overlooked by users. If you are concerned then switch off the gps functionality when taking photos before uploading to sites like Dropbox.

Hi Thearasins,
this issue has been discussed in the Forums a lot. It is an intentional feature as all users who are able to interact with the shared folders will also bear the space the folder/s take up individually.

You can see the help article about it here:

Please see this help article on how to use Public Links:
https://www.dropbox.com/help/1…

Remember that the files have to be uploaded to 100% first before the links actually work.
Move your mouse over the desktop Dropbox client on your notification tray for more details on the upload progress.

Dropbox offers its protection. I like it!

Dropbox is #1 in my book. Sugar Sync is pretty good too. However, I'd never use Google's Cloud services.

Sorry for being late to the party, but just what are people so grateful/satisfied about? Did you read the policy? Anyone?

Listen, I like Dropbox and have a pro account. But I do think about switching because I believe in privacy as a human right.

The TRUSTe and safe harbor stuff are mostly about disclosure, not actual practices. They require choice in whether a company can share information about you, but here the choice is “use Dropbox or don't.” If those of you thanking Dropbox are concerned about privacy, do you know that their policy lets them:

* Identify your files, uploads, and downloads and connect this information to your individual identity.
* Use this information in pretty much any way they choose within their company (they can use it to “provide and improve our Service”)
* Says they can and will REMOVE THE DROPBOX ENCRYPTION ON YOUR FILES to give to law enforcement if they think there's a good-faith reason to (criteria provided, but vague enough to prevent meaningful protection)
* Keep longs of the above. They say if you cancel your account, they delete your information, but the terms say they can keep it and use it forever for various vague reasons such as ” to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.” This can justify keeping any and all information.

Disclosure is great and should be applauded, but disclosing that you have a weak privacy and security policy should not be. If I am wrong and I can opt-out of the practices above while still being a Dropbox customer, (which is the spirit of Safe Harbor even if it is not the letter), please let me know.
