Your photos, simplified (Part II)

Posted by David Euresti on April 26, 2012

Remember back in February, we announced a whole set of features to make it easy to bring all your photos and videos together in one place? Well since then, lots of folks have been using our Android app to automatically upload mobile pictures of their vacation and videos of their dog — we’ve even heard tales of Dropbox saving the day when phones completely died!

Today we’re ready to tell the second part in our photos story: now with Dropbox you can automatically upload from just about any camera, tablet, SD card or smartphone — pretty much anything that takes photos or videos! Plus, you can view your uploaded pictures on the web from our spiffy new Photos page!

Getting pictures off your camera has always been a huge pain. So we put our heads down and worked worked worked to ensure that automatic upload would play nicely with anything that might have a photo or video on it. With the newest version for Mac or Windows, you can just plug your camera, phone, or SD card into your computer and with a few clicks of the mouse all your photos and videos are in your Dropbox!

Automatic uploading from the desktop is designed to work perfectly with the Dropbox Android app. Your photos are copied from your camera to your Dropbox and uploaded, in full-quality and at their original size, to your private Camera Uploads folder. As your photos upload, you can access them from anywhere and move and share them as you see fit.

On the web, we’ve made the pictures you’ve uploaded shine on our new Photos page, with nice large thumbnails, grouped by month. You can hover over each to find the date, or click to see them full-size and then download or share them with a link.

You’re probably thinking “But my photos are large, won’t automatic uploading eat up all my Dropbox space?” We’ve got you covered. Don’t forget, we’ll give you 500 MB of Dropbox space for your first automatic upload. As you take and upload more photos and videos, you can earn up to 3 GB extra, for free.

So go ahead, download the new version (codename: Phoenix Down) and save all your memories in your Dropbox! (And stay tuned for Part III…)

This is pretty cool, but it would be REALLY NICE if we could manually drag photos into the “Camera Uploads” folder, and then have the Dropbox website automatically display those photos in the snazzy new way for us.

Please add the
ability to pull photos from nearby EyeFi SD cards. Their sync software
is complete garbage and having one less service running and talking to
the network would be great.

I had switched to Google Drive just because. Now I'm switching back just for this.

True story.

April 27, 2012

Switched to Google Drive yesterday but started doing some research and realised just why Dropbox is a better service. A lot of small features make this service much better. For example.

“In Google Drive when a file is uploaded. You make some changes into it from your desktop. The entire file uploads again. In dropbox, only the changes are uploaded. E.g. your file is 100mb. you edit it and it now becomes 100.1 mb. the entire 100.1 mb will be uploaded not just 0.1 mb. here it gets even worse. your file was 100mb. you edited it and it now becomes 99 mb. this 99 mb will be uploaded to google drive. in case of dropbox, nothing will be uploaded; your most current version is 99 mb and that will only count to your storage.”

It's the small features like this that make Dropbox a superior service. I look forward to seeing what you guys have planned for the coming year.

I have several cameras and a couple of iPhones and while this is cool (and I use it now) it gets messy with all files in one folder. Take a look at Picasa, when it imports images it will create subfolders by date and name as such (your choice). I name them yyyy-mm-dd. That way everything gets organized easily and you can then add to the folder name (yyyy-mm-dd, event name). That or by Camera name…or something to avoid the mess.

Is there any plans to allow you to select which photos you want to upload? It would be much more useful this way as i'm struggling to upload anything from my iPhone as I don't have enough space so it just gives out straight away.

Read one of the other blogs. Dropbox now has a “drag'n'drop” feature where you simply drag across, say your photos from your computer (or SD chip) directly into your online folders … This is supposed to work with whatever browser you are using. (e.g. IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari?) … Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm exploring the new features tonight, as all my photo folders were “shared folders” with my family. Putting them into albums and using the new link feature, I think will be a lot better.

I discovered that moving files and folders in Dropbox is a cinch. Dropbox reindexes everything without affecting your Internet allowance for uploads/downloads. Cool!

I use a tri-boot desktop system (OSX, Windows 7 64-bit, Ubuntu) with all operating systems running natively (no virtual PCs).  The import feature works on OSX but not on Win7.  Oddly enough, it works just fine on my laptop/Win7 machine.  I've tried adjusting AutoPlay settings and even running the command manually, but it's as if the uploader feature/program itself doesn't want to start.  Has anyone found issues besides AutoPlay settings that have prevented them from being able to run the uploader on Windows 7?

Can I just say that it annoys the hell out of me that Dropbox doesn't make it amply clear everytime that previous users (Students or beta testers) who already got bonus free space, will NOT get additional free space when they open up the product to the whole world. Why won't they just say so explicitly? It'll save a million people from wondering, a few thousand from asking in comments, and a few hundred from testing and seeing. Dropbox people are either super sloppy or super arrogant.

April 27, 2012

Guys, you're missing the point. Go find a CABLE, go back to 1999, stick the cable in your COMPUTER and then it'll upload the images.

This service is 2 years too late, everybody uses wi-fi sync and some don't have computers (iPhone PC Free).. It's working great, I have to say that, but if you depend on cables in 2012 you're outdated.

April 27, 2012

Nope. If you were one of the few lucky ones who earned 5GB instead of 3GB, be glad. None of the beta testers will receive a bonus now it's out of beta stage, we were all fooled into thinking we were getting something extra by beta-testing ;)

Of course, it's a great bonus and I'm thankful for it. But next time they want beta testers I'm not falling for it.

How are you charging you device? Wireless induction?  For all of my devices that wifi sync, I still use a cable to charge them via wall or computer.

Wifi uploading of a ton of photos will take forever.  My guess is the main reason they use a USB cable is for speed of uploading.

Wifi may be uber cool for syncing, but it's no speed demon, regardless what kind of router you have.

I was part of the beta program on this and got my 5gb of space.  Now that this is a released product (as ver 1.4), it works just as well.  Very happy with how this uploads photos.

My only beef was the naming of the photos.  I get that for date and time purposes and uploading from multiple devices, they had to come up with a longer naming convention, but it's still annoying to some level.

When you use the desktop to auto-upload your photos, does Dropbox rename the photos? The photos are renamed when I use the auto-upload feature on my Android phone and its VERY frustrating. It makes it hard to find duplicate uploads when the file names are different. Why can't Dropbox just upload the photos as their original names like IMG_1000.jpg.  It renames them 2012-4-12 09.12.45.jpg

Nice idea, and worked perfectly for me (Samsung Galaxy S connected to a Windows 7 machine)…

…EXCEPT…

This post fails to mention that this new “read directly from the camera” feature does not give people the “free storage bump” if they already earned that at the launch of the the old “Read from external card” feature in the past.

Would have been nice if you'd stated that, instead of making it sound like a new/different program. I wasted a lot of time discovering that one on my own.

I totally agree. I wish it would retain the original file names. It makes file organization tough, esp when looking for duplicates. It can't be that hard to deal with time stamped files. Dropbox can do it with other files. It's smart enough to know which version is newer and not overwrite.

Fix the darn tray icon. Dropbox programmers screwed up again and are so arrogant they think they are the only company on planet earth that should have their colorful logo in the notification area on Win7. they did this once before and said, “the users get confused, don't know it's in the tray”. Really? You customers are the only ones that don't know the arrow shows all the apps?

Drop the ego guys and fix the darn icon. Or maybe every company should drop standards of white icons and have cool flashing colorful icons that also draw attention to themselves?

April 28, 2012

Renaming files sounds odd. But no fear: I use Duplicate Cleaner (a freeware program) to round up Duplicates. It can find them even if they are renamed (I found many). So as long as the actual photo hasn't been manipulated there shouldn't be a problem. However, if the photos have been reduced in Filesize (cf. Kodak, Flickr, SnapFish and other site), then you'll probably have to look at your photos one at a time.

BunyipBoy

I'm not sure if I follow you. I like having the Dropbox mini icon on my taskbar in Win7 and my XP laptop. It means I can go straight to the Dropbox folders and subfolders and away I go. and the question to Dropbox management is: why do we need to manually turn this off? why is this the only company in the world that can't comply with Win7 standards and must be different?

They did this once before last year, realized the mistake, and fixed it. Now this release does it again. It's a standards question! Imagine every company now decides they are so specially, users are so stupid, their colorful icon needs to 'show icon'.

I  uploaded about 2Gb worth of video yesterday with the auto-import and upload feature on my Windows PC but haven't seen any space added to my account, does it take a while to get applied?  i remember when i was uploading from my phone curing the mobile app beta the space was added in real-time.

Can not benefit from it. I have a Windows Phone. First, Dropbox has no app for it. :-( Secondly, I can only transfer my photos via Zune (no mass storage) and Dropbox sees this not as a camera upload.

How wonderful, I sent 2GB file (took 25 hours), to discover that 3GB does not receive the bonus because I was a beta test in February. -. – Dropbox bad, bad!

Thank you for providing the information about getting extra space.

Yes, I agree. All of us here, I reckon, already have dropbox. Re. Referrals however, my referral link on Facebook, email, etc etc never brought a single member on board for which I got credit. Only personal referrals via Dropbox have gained me bonus data, and these are the only ones I've been able to track. IMHO referral links are good for Dropbox, but not me.

The photo uploads _could_ be so useful, if only you would please listen to all the requests to make the file renaming optional! I just can't make any good use of it now with all my photos being renamed to date and time and dumped in one big folder. It would be the easiest way to get photos off my ipod, if only you would fix this huge problem.

Hi,
i am sorry if this question has been answered before. I'd like to use this facility from my Android Mobile (by turning the Camera Upload functionality 'On'). My question is – is there an option to remove photos from Mobile memory later and not 'sync' and thus delete from Drop Box ? Obviously, the idea is to use it as a one way Sync from Mobile to DrobBox and keep phone memory clear.

(This way they will still all be in your dropbox, and not on your phone. However you could still view them on your phone through the dropbox app!)

Recent numbers show that 63% of US households own a pet – that's 71.1 million homes and families with dogs, cats, iguanas, parakeets, fish, ferrets, potbellied pigs, etc, etc., Taking care of a pet is tougher than taking care of an infant, since our pets can't speak. Hence, making sure your pet is safe and happy when you leave it alone at home should be a priority for all pet owners. One of the simplest ways of watching over a pet remotely is by using some sort of webcam software like GotoCamera http://www.gotocamera.com that is easily available online these days. Thanks to technology and some very smart people who are working on making things easier for us, you can now use your basic webcam to monitor your pets while you're away from them.

 Guys,
you're missing the point. Go find a CABLE, go back to 1999, stick the
cable in your COMPUTER and then it'll upload the images.

This service is 2 years too late, everybody uses wi-fi sync and some
don't have computers (iPhone PC Free).. It's working great, I have to
say that, but if you depend on cables in 2012 you're outdated.

Ugh… I don’t exactly appreciate the fact that now, Dropbox keeps adding a ‘.dropbox.device’ file to my camera’s SD card every time I connect it to my computer despite me telling Dropbox not to handle photos on it every time I connect it to my computer. In addition to that, it seems that even after I delete ‘.dropbox.device’ (and the folder ‘MISC’ created to put it in), after leaving the SD card plugged in for a while, Dropbox just recreates the ‘MISC’ folder and the ‘.dropbox.device’ file again! Seriously, that is annoying.
