Get space!

Posted by Rajeev Nayak on May 21, 2012

Back in November we posted about a whole bunch of ways to get more free space on Dropbox, last month we doubled our referral credits, and just last weekend we kicked off Dropquest II.

With so many ways to increase the size of your Dropbox, we decided to whip up a new Get Space page to put it all in one place. Some ways to get more space (and lots of it) include upgrading your account, referring your friends, or connecting with Twitter and Facebook!

To boost your account, just follow the link at the top of your dropbox.com homepage.
More free space awaits you!

PS: Don’t forget you have until June 2 to complete Dropquest to get an extra 1 GB free!

I just stumbled across your service recently – and fell in love with your Get Space page. It's so how awesome how many simple ways you guys have to get more freer space. Way to go, best customer service that I ever came across. And thanks a lot for the link to Dropquest 2012, for some reason I'd thought it had ended already. Keep up the great work, guys!

It would be great if you can extend the referrals program. I have more friends that I would like to invite do Dropbox, but I've already went over the limit for Free Space. I don't want to open a new account, just to get more space for the current one.

thanks. I use Dropbox everyday :)

it is 0.98GB

I believe that is the point, to get you to link with them on facebook and twitter.

Bear in mind Dropbox doesn't *have* to offer free space, but they do so any way and it's a fantastic service for I'm presuming your free account. Don't moan because they cap the free space limit; if you love Dropbox that much then pay for the next tier to really show your support.

I have the opposite of the problem most encounter with free space – I have much space and no idea what to do with it)
It would be great if several users could “donate” space into a shared pool and use it  together. Pretty sure this will never come to pass though, as such option would completely jeopardize Dropbox' freemium model.
P.S. Before I forget… Sync for mobile devices? Please?

I'd like to point out for the benefit of all that partsof dropquest 2012 are 100% impossible for a blind person to complete, even if they are given instructions. I won't give specificshere, but let's just say that dragging and dropping images without proper labels is more than a little bit non-doable. Oh well, at least I got 256 mb of space…

StevenBurge
May 23, 2012

Good Point.  If they didn't cap it then people would figure out a way to get 1TB free.  $9.99 for 50 GB suits me fine.

It seems that way.  I wonder what implications the new google drive will have on db?

Zhonglei Wang

Several ideas about Dropbox:
1. Be an open platform as quickly as possible;
2. Let the user choose how to sync. For example, I have 3 pc/notebooks, and I wanted to use the first one as a master storage device, the second one as a mobile workstation, while the last one as the main working/administration station. Dropbox should allow me to set up the first one to be “only addable/ever increasing, synching every time I run the program, and having all the wanted versions of files”, the second one to be “only having certain folders permitted to be edited or changed/synched”, and the third one to be “master device, just the same as the dropbox website”. Correspondingly, the dropbox program in the first device should not be logged in or out or deleted by a pc-user; in the second one should not be permitted to change accounting settings or folder settings; and only the third one should be linked to dropbox as the way it is linked to all machines.
3. Let the user choose when to sync, such as “prompted sync”, “scheduled sync”, “conditional sync”, “event-triggered sync”, “temporary sync”, “sync and then delete after 2 hours/machine turn-off:, “privacy sync”, “limited-time sync”, “sharing with someone but automatically delete after certain time/with a command”, “sync to facebook photo albums:, “let dropbox control facebook account and drop on it”,” dropbox mail”, etc…
4. Dropbox-social network.

Tobias Steinke
May 23, 2012

That's great and all, but you should still offer affordable paid plans for additional 5 GB or 10 GB.

1. What do you mean? API is available to anyone interested.
2. Is already implemented in the desctop client, it allows to choose which folders to sync.3. I guess tere is too little of a niche for such specialisation. Maybe such options would be available for corporative clients.
4. I advise against it. There are too much of them already and DB team would be better off focusing their efforts on the big thing.

I'm very unhappy with Dropbox and am on the verge of removing my whole team away from Dropbox. Below is an email I'd like to share which I sent to my whole team today to give you insights of how many company can be having this conversation internally as we are:

Hi, team,Today's dropbox accident (loss of 17000 files through our intern who accidentally deleted them) really caused me to worry about Dropbox's reliability as a mission-critical business solution. For example, their user interface is mistake-prone, lacking permission control. It's not the first time we've had this issue of accidental removal of files by an employee. There was not an easy one single “recover” button next to that record showing Amber's deleting 17000 files. The fact that she has to go through hundreds if not more folders and recover files one by one (17000 of them) is just really poor user interface.I have no way to verify that all files are recovered, since Amber has been asking me. I'm very unhappy that for such mission critical service, they do not offer a support line for live calls. I've sent them an email and have not heard back (fingers crossed).I was talking about this with Nic and he suggested alternative business that are better for professional use: Microsoft Sky Drive or Google Drive. He recommends Sky Drive which is a more mature product. they both have permission control. Box.net is another option though we have to look at them closely. Would love your thoughts. I think it's too dangerous to rely so much on such a solution that is mistake-prone and doesn't offer the level of support we need.

If I could afford to pay for it, I would. However, I cannot afford so I show my support to Dropbox by promoting their service to all my friends and family members.

I can honestly say I have referred hundreds, if not thousands of new users and some of them have paid for their services when I described the benefits.

I love dropbox and this is my way of showing them how much I appreciate their service.

That’s not Dropbox’s problem. Dropbox don’t have to offer free space for referrals *at all*. They still have a business to run, and hardware to keep running, just for you (and every one else) on free accounts. You’re lucky, so please don’t moan about the service, which is a fantastic offering.
