Your photos, simplified (Part III)

Posted by Tina Wen on June 21, 2012

We’re happy to announce that we’ve rolled out the third part of our photos story:  now you can automatically upload all the photos and videos you take with your iPhone or iPad to Dropbox!

Don’t worry about losing those once-in-a-lifetime shots, no matter what happens to your iPhone. Get the latest Dropbox app for iOS and simply turn on the camera upload feature. When you open the app, photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad are saved to Dropbox at their original size and quality in a private Camera Uploads folder. It’s easy to flip through all your automatically uploaded photos and videos in the Photos section of the Dropbox website. You can decide whether to use your data plan or Wi-Fi only, and pictures will simply upload while the app’s running! Plus, Dropbox won’t kill your battery if you’re low on power.

With this release, your iPhone, Android, and digital cameras can finally all work together. It’s easy to bring your photos and videos together in one place. And once your photos are in Dropbox, it’s super easy to share them with your friends and family using a shared folder or a link!

In case you missed it, you don’t need to worry about this feature using all your Dropbox space — we’ll give you an extra 500 MB for free for your first automatic upload from a camera, phone or tablet! The more photos and videos you upload this way, the more free space we’ll give you (up to a total of 3 GB per Dropbox account)!

What are you waiting for?
Download the latest version of Dropbox for iOS from the iTunes App Store now!

What if we have already gotten free space for using camera uploads on the desktop? Do we get more? Or is that it?

Mike Helmick

I received space for uploading on my desktop, then I uploaded video and pics from my phone and reached my limit and didn't get more space.

“The more photos and videos you upload this way, the more free space we’ll give you” that means you need to upload until they may decide to give you more up to 3Gb. This is what i understood :P

I've tested the Camera Uploads in BETA version.
For that I've got 5gb free space. Do I get more free space now if I use this feature again?

Thx for the reply

Apparently you do not get more. I asked the helpdesk about it. The
answer was not really clear, but I think it meant: once you got 3GB
using Camera Upload on computer – you cannot have 3 more using your
iPhone. It is connected with the account, not the device.

I previously got the free 5GB by uploading pictures from a computer and was disappointed when I got nothing from trying this out.  I'm not complaining, as I've gotten lots of free space with Dropbox.  However, I do think that the wording in this blog post does not make it sufficiently clear and is the cause of my disappointment.  It says “We'll give you and extra 500 MB for free for your first automatic upload from a camera, phone or tablet!”  I've never uploaded from a camera, phone, or tablet before, so I naturally expected the extra free space.  I wasted my time trying to upload more photos and videos to get it to work before finding out from other comments here that there's a caveat that they never mentioned.

They do not need your *current* location, but the location stored in the photos. This is needed to be able to access the metadata in the photos which it of course need to be able to send them to your other devices.

Other apps that access the camera roll without asking do not get access to the metadata (or at least not the GPS metadata).

Hi guys,

I've updated the app and have been taking/uploading my latest pictures for the last week, and I didn't receive the promised 500MB for uploading pictures for the first time from my iPhone, neither after the first time. I've uploaded around 500 pics so ar this week, and I haven't received any space extra (as it actually happened in the past)

Any suggestions?

You need to enable auto upload in the app, and let it auto upload. It can't be a photo that previously been uploaded to Dropbox either. For more info, you could check

The photos have their original and modified dates changed to the new filename date. This makes it tough to sort by date, especially since different cameras are uploaded at different times, so the relative taking order is destroyed.

DropBox stomps on all 4 EXIF dates in the photo's metadata!

That's way harsh.

I generally like dropbox but I will not use it on any of our families phones until the following is fixed.

1.  Respect EXIF
2.  Allow date stamps to be maintained
3.  Respect folders
4.  Option to auto-upload specific folders/etc… as soon as new picture detected.

Daniel Mendalka
July 24, 2012

What do you mean in point 1? Is Dropbox removing EXIF data on upload?
What do you mean in point 3?
Dropbox prepared everything to be as simple as possible. If you take any picture it goes stright to Camera Upload directory. Why you need to customize it?

I could be missing something but I uploaded pics from my iPhone using Camera Upload, and I can see them online and on desktop Dropbox. However, I went to Dropbox for iPad and none of the photos are in the Camera Upload folder. I thought they are supposed to sync up. Anyone?

Daniel Mendalka
July 24, 2012

You should check if your settings on iPad are correct. Try hitting refresh when you are in Camera upload folder and see how files are ordered. They are from the oldest to the newest so you probablly should scroll page to the bottom.

Different photo apps on android save photos on different folders. It would be nice to have an option on Dropbox to set more 'camera uploads' folders. Or better to upload(or sync) a folder(not just a file) on click

Adding files to Dropbox won't help you save space on your local hard drive. You should do it for backup and shareing reasons.

If you need space on your computer buy external hard drive and move all large files which you haven't used for long time there.

I just checked it to make sure on my Nexsus tablet and while photos are uploaded to Camera Upload dir you can delete them from your mobile device (using photo preview or something, not Dropbox app) and they will stay in your Dropbox.

It should helps with your issue.

Many people like me have been complaining of this. Dropbox stomps on the EXIF dates in the Camera Uploads folder. The filename is re-written to the date uploaded (not even date the photo was taken!) and *All* 4 EXIF dates are overwritten. Can’t even figure out when the picture was originally taken, or what its original filename was.

That makes Camera Uploads pretty useless until this is fixed. How are we even supposed to remove the corresponding pictures once the originals are in iPhoto or other photo-management app? Their answer is, apparently, “shut up.”

HELP! My dropbox got jammed by agreeing to upload 900+ photos from my iphone.  I was just trying to check out how it worked but it took so long that I eventually had to unplug.  Now I can’t do ANYTHING with my dropbox account (can’t even save a new version of a word document) until, what, I complete the upload???  It says I have run out of space (even beyond the 3 MB increase)… but I physically dragged/removed all the photos from my dropbox so it should be fine!!! Help.  This sucks.  Wish I had never clicked to accept dropbox to upload photos.

Daniel Mendalka
September 21, 2012

It depends how many photos you have.

If it is some massive amount you have to look out not to exceed size of your Dropbox account. It can be helpful to use some compression as well to upload / download it faster.

But if you don’t want to spend to much time on it, setup account drag&drop photos into shared folder and just wait till photos will upload. I’ve made that many times after various trips with friends. Works really great.
