Hello, Windows 8. Dropbox is here!

Posted by Ambrus Csaszar and Max Belanger on January 07, 2013

Hey everybody, guess what? We just released Dropbox for your Windows 8 device! Now you can enjoy photos, videos, and other stuff in your Dropbox in the whizzy new Windows experience. Check it out:

With the Dropbox app for Windows 8, you can easily flip through all your stuff, preview your pictures, and watch your videos with a tap.

You can also share stuff from Dropbox (like your puppy pics) with other Windows 8 apps! Share on Facebook or Twitter contacts through the People app or send a link with the Mail app.

Whether you’ve got a Surface or any other tablet or PC running Windows 8, today’s release is another way we’ve got your back.

Can’t wait to get started? Download the app here.

Do I have to uninstall the Dropbox desktop application for this?

Wagner
January 7, 2013

Hi guys! The app has a great looking and nice functions.
Unfortunatelly to me without the local sync function this app is useless. The only thing I expect from DropBox is the most basic function: work locally with any type of file and get it synced. I don’t have an internet connection everytime it so I need a local copy of my files. This can be done with the desktop PC application but my mobile device is a Microsoft Surface. Do you have plans to fix that?

It does not seem to offer syncing ability yet. So, it is right now more of a viewer. So do not remove the regular app.

These kinds of things saying “such and such app has been released for Windows 8″ piss me off. Dropbox has always been available for Windows 8 – as has EVERY application that runs on Windows 7. The correct way to say this is that the program has been released on the Windows Store as an optimized app. These are the kinds of articles/announcements that are turning people off from Windows 8, because they lead people to believe that you couldn’t have used Dropbox or whatever other app they use unless it’s made with a Windows 8 version – that’s simply not true! I’ve been using Dropbox since Day 1 of Windows 8, and haven’t had a problem with it.

If you have a cheaper Win 8 tablet running RT then this is great news. RT may be more affordable, but it doesn’t run every program. Now it has dropbox! :D

I’d rather call it “DB for Windows 8 Metro”. Only this is what I consider correct – calling it “DB for Metro” would also be false since Metro existed years before Windows 8 came into people’s minds.

So true. I am on Windows 8 and never go in to Metro. I’d have loved Dropbox to focus their energy on Windows Phone 8 app over desktop Metro app

I am assuming it’s C#/XAML-based app? If so, it should be fairly easy to port to Windows Phone.

Also have you guys looked at something like Mono for building your mobile apps? You could cover pretty much most of the platforms – iOS, Android, WP and Win8 RT.

What about app for Windows Phone 7.5 and 8?

Max
January 9, 2013

Dear Dropbox Rep Who Happens To Be Reading this:

Wagner is dead on — offline access and syncing is the killer app.

People buy Surfaces because they want to write. And Dropbox is a dream for writers with tablets.

But if we can’t save or access our files offline, that dream is dead. If I can’t access my file on the train, or in the dentist’s office, or at that cafe without wifi, I can’t save it to Dropbox. Which sucks, because I want to.

I was so eager for Dropbox’s app, because I assumed it would solve the central problem of Surface (for me), which is that it’s a writer’s tablet without a writer’s syncing solution.

Fix this!

Max

If I click your link, I get to it. But it’s nowhere to be found it I search the Windows Store. Why is this? Also, please fill in release notes or something. The Store gave me an update for this Dropbox yesterday (or two days ago?), and it’s still written “Initial release”. It’s important to write what changed with the update!

Search for dropbox click the one with the dropbox icon it should be free.

Peter English
January 12, 2013

I agree. As far as I can see, I can do everything the app does with a browser. What I want DropBox for is to automatically sync files, so I can use the latest version whichever device I’m using.

I’ve paid extra for dropbox storage, or I’d switch to an alternative. I just hope a proper version of Dropbox that does what we need will be released soon.

Phillip Taylor

Sync, Sync, Sync… The WHOLE point is the ability to SYNC across multiple devices! Guy’s I hope you’re working overtime on this because this app for RT is no better than using a memory stick!

January 16, 2013

I cannot log in to the App on my Surface, it keeps telling me that I am offline, but that’s wrong… I’m online, all other apps can use the internet connection… but Dropbox still keeps telling me, that i should go online…

windows 8 is amazing, especially for low power machines, and especially if you get used to all the shortcuts, with its updates it is only going to get better. It is certainly much better than windows 7, there is no question about that.
The only problem is some of the apps are quite different from their program versions, it requires some getting used to and some research to use them more efficiently, skype and skydrive apps could have been better. I don’t know how to send files in the skype app for example, gotto search for it.

Is there a way to add files into the Dropbox? I have mine installed on a laptop and there is no interface to put my files in? Does this mean I am still tied to my PC for adding, removing and editing, if so its a pretty useless program.

January 19, 2013

I have to add my comment here too. My RT device to work on the impossible confines of modern air travel, in native windows office format. I was so looking forward to the seamless sync of my laptop on my RT, but no, this app for RT sucks. In fact I would be embarrassed to be the DropBox employee to have released this. No offline access, no ability to sync selected files or directories, no ability to create or upload, or even edit and save as far as I can work out. It’s just some kind of viewer, which can be done via the website.

Here’s some free advice DB developers, make the sync work with desktop mode, allow me to create the DropBox sync folder on the memory card or C drive. Allow me to sync selected files as I KNOW the tablets have limited memory, but I need a FUNCTIONAL app not a crippled app.

I’m a great fan of Dropbox, but this app totally lets you down. I don’t know if this is to do with Dropbox or restrictions put on you by Microsoft, but this app is pointless. The main thing I love about Dropbox is the fact that all your files are stored locally so you can access them offline and they sync when you reconnect but his doesn’t even do this. WHY?

The DropBox app doesn’t sync and so , as people say, deafeats the purpose. I have to go to DropBox online to add files to sync across devices. The “other” Dropbox which worked fine on Win 7 will not work on Win 8 at all. Bit of a backwards step right now.

Dropbox, typically very good.

February 5, 2013

This app is extremely flashy and modern looking, so good job on that! But as of right now I don’t know how this is being justified as “Windows 8 Dropbox”. It is just an extremely nice UI, lacking the functionality of the traditional Dropbox…Is there anywhere that has posted a time frame as to when the Windows 8 Dropbox will get the useful features that we joined this service for?

PS. You know the service is good when you see this many people complaining online.

February 7, 2013

I’m very new to DropBox and was just thinking of trusting it with a load of files that I need for my work as an on-line tutor. That was when I was using it on my desktop running Win 7. Then I moved over to the Laptop running Win 8 and downloaded the app. What a disappointment! when I am using the desktop and working in a browser (to access the virtual classroom), I can’t see how to access my files in the DropBox app. DropBox is not showing in Windows Explorer, next to my other drives, like it does under Win 7, so how am I meant to access my .pdf files to upload them into my virtual classroom.

If I am missing something, please explain how I should be using DropBox with Win 8.

TheDaleks
February 8, 2013

There isn’t a single tab, menu or right-click menu in this app. This means you can’t download a file to use later, you have to open it over the network, then do a Save As. Didn’t anyone test it? It looks like it was thrown together in an afternoon.

I am computer tech and just gave dropbox a big sales pitch to one of my customers and he purchased 200GB plan only to find out the app version of Windows RT is a viewer. The whole point was he wants to work on his office docs on his surface out of his dropbox folder not view them.

Fix it please. You might as well have not released an app at all this is bad for dropboxs street cred.

I just bought my very first laptop (which is long overdue, I’m almost 30) and they call come with Windows 8. I hate it. I hate it so much I want to return it. It’s a beautiful computer. I got some really awesome specs for an amazing price. I did my research before my purchase. And I said “Well, I might as well roll with the punches.” knowing full well it’s more difficult now to purchase a brand new computer with Win7. So, I went through my amazing, custom built desktop and made sure I had all my files in dropbox. (Don’t worry, there’s no way I’d ever get rid of my desktop because I’m smarter than that.)

ONLY to find out that I can’t download any of my amazing pictures to further personalize this stupid Win8. I’m a paying customer and I can’t get to my stuff. It works perfectly on my Win7 desktop, Android phone, and blackberry. I haven’t had any problems on my tablet and I’ve even played with it on an iPhone and it worked better than this piece of useless crap you’ve put out. I’m very disappointed in you, dropbox, very disappointed.

I feel like your mom and I just found out that you’ve been doing drugs. I still love you, but I’m very disappointed in you.

I am sorry but this new window8 sucks!!!, I can’t upload or move file like I used to with my windows7, Ipad and my Iphone. what a bummer! Please do something to remedy this situation…. I thinking to return my windows 8 laptop and get me a apple.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Yes, we all know that Windows 8 is pretty terrible. It still has a desktop function though, so just go to your desktop, navigate to the dropbox homepage, click to download the latest software and install it. You get all the usual dropbox sync features everybody is moaning about, and don’t have to mess about with the Windows-pretending-to-be-an-iPad application store. Easy! Now, I just need to find the start button and I’m done…

Chris
February 18, 2013

as far as i can see dropbox doesn’t really work in Windows 8. It seems to be impossible to share files or get files via the desktop. I’m very frustrated and restraining myself from saying something really bad about this product.

Hi everyone, I have a question about dropbox on windows 8. On my previous pc (windows XP) there was a small icon of dropbox in the under right corner of my screen from where I could easily open docs and stuff. On my new pc (windows 8) it isn’t there.. So is there a way to get this icon there on my new pc or is the only way to work in dropbox via the main screen of windows 8?

Thx in advance

There is a workaround for this – not perfect but possible.

SkyDrive is integrated integrated very well with Windows 8 and Windows RT.

So you can sync SkyDrive with your Dropbox using cloudHQ. So all your Dropbox files will be offline accessible (or just folder you decided to syn) and any update on SkyDrive side will automatically propagated to Dropbox.

Please go to cloudHQ blog to see the exact instruction how to do that.

Got Windows 8 in Vmware so I can IT those poor people who buy a PC with Windows 8 on it. The first App I wanted to install was Dropbox so I can move files around easily between OS’es But WHAT!!! I can’t put files in from W8…

WTF!!!

So Dropbox is now Lookbox in Windows 8!!! How utterly stupid, which idiot decided to do that to Dropbox, we need to find them and name and shame them. I’ve found so many reasons NOT to have W8 and so few reason to convince me its great and now I have yet another reason to NOT have Windows 8, the list just keeps growing. Seriously, I’d rather lose Windows 8 than drop Dropbox.

A customer didn’t listen to me and bought an Asus Touchscreen with W8, the Asus looked awesome, the touchscreen was wow!! this is so cool and then the reality set in and you start to spend so much time trying to find out HOW to do a simple task that it makes the system practically unusable; a point in case was Dropbox, fortunately I did that in the privacy of my own home and not in front of a customer, else I would have looked like a right Twit;

Me: “so you install the app and drag files into it… oh! you can’t Hmmm! er! hold on!, right, no, er! I’ll try from the desktop, er no, ok erm! oh you can’t use Dropbox to transfer files and have them accessible whereever you are”
Customer: “but isn’t that the whole point of Dropbox”
Me: “Yerrrrr’esssss, but not in Windows 8… apparently”
Customer: “oh!”
Me: “Sorry, I assumed it would work like it does in every other OS, but obviously not”
Customer:”I wonder why”

Me: “Would you like a Skydrive Account and a hotmail email? :-)”

Concept Great, Application “Big Fat Fail”

Thank god I use Mac.

I really hope that you are working on a new update for the windows 8 dropbox app. It really lacks in features, and i was really dissapointed first time i really needed it.
