Welcome Mailbox

Posted by Drew and Arash on March 15, 2013

Today we’re really excited to welcome the Mailbox team to Dropbox.

Like many of you, when we discovered Mailbox we fell in love—it was simple, delightful, and beautifully engineered. Many have promised to help us with our overflowing inboxes, but the Mailbox team actually delivered.

After spending time with Gentry, Scott, and the team, it became clear that their calling was the same as ours at Dropbox—to solve life’s hidden problems and reimagine the things we do every day. We all quickly realized that together we could save millions of people a lot of pain.

Dropbox doesn’t replace your folders or your hard drive: it makes them better. The same is true with Mailbox. It doesn’t replace your email: it makes it better. Whether it’s your Dropbox or your Mailbox, we want to find ways to simplify your life.

We’re all looking forward to making Mailbox even better and getting it into as many people’s hands as possible. There’s so much to do and we’re excited to get started!

March 15, 2013

That’s funny, because on the Mailbox site (under Story), it says “Our goal is to put Mailbox in the hands of everyone who wants it. That means supporting additional email providers and mobile devices.” And since Dropbox has an Android app, it seems reasonable to expect an Android app for Mailbox as well.

That’s why I asked if you were on one of the teams. Because you seem to have access to the roadmap, that others don’t. Anyhow, it doesn’t matter to me either way. Although Mailbox does look like an interesting idea for GTD, I can always use Evolution or another client to get my inbox to zero, and organize things.

Mike
March 15, 2013

Dear Jake. I love Dropbox, and I have an Android device. Please do not spread rumours. It’s not okay with finger pointing at this point. I wish mailbox would come to Android but that is not going to happened. Negative or not. Speaking of maths, it was Pi day yesterday. Happy incorrect Pi day 3.15.

laff
March 15, 2013

There isn’t any logic to see. There’s no requirement for Google to own a product in order for an application to be written and accepted into Google Play. That’s all I see you saying. If you’re reasoning is otherwise, please explain yourself better. If you’re argument is to imply that Google is a competitor to Dropbox, and therefore won’t allow it.. I haven’t seen any evidence they would do that. You’re welcome to cite some and correct me if I’m incorrect.

I don’t think you have any ground to stand on when you say it won’t happen. and why do you feel the need to post that 100x on this thread when you have no proof? You’re the negative one.

Mike
March 15, 2013

Hi there Mr. Kandersoon. There is no soon in the word android. Google has its own cloud storage service so there is no motive for Dropbox to launch an Android version of Mailbox. Mind you, the Gmail application is for both iOS (available from the App Store) and Android (built in in most regions, except some asian regions). If Mailbox would be launched for android before you and me grow old and never ever use an electronic device ever again (yes, thats what happeneds I’ve been told), I’ll owe you 1 bitcoin.

Brandon Brown
March 15, 2013

Actually, the guy has a point.. Sparrow was amazing until Google bought it, tossed the app and stole the developers.

Mike
March 15, 2013

Still, if you do not opt out Google will collect information from your email (that is your incoming and outgoing email) for ads whenever you visit a site with Google Adwords on them, or conduct a websearch with Google.

Mike

Mike
March 15, 2013

Glad to be of service. //St Patrick

Jake
March 15, 2013

I’m just trying to figure out why you think there won’t be one? Mailbox isn’t a cloud storage app, it’s an email app that’s built as an improvement even over gmail. if mailbox can do email better than google, why not get it on android? It’s not like anyone has said “there will be no mailbox for android. we hate google. he’s ugly and stoopid”. To the contrary, now there are more developers available to do spend on shoring up the weak spots (like ios only)

Jake
March 15, 2013

No announcement means not happening? Wrong.

Mike
March 15, 2013

I know there will not be one. Given all the information that is available, and todays announcement. Ever.

Mike
March 15, 2013

Mr Jake. Or should I say Mr. Fake? I woud like to direct your attention to the very URL of this page. Dropbox dot com. Not google dot com. This is your last warning before you get a yellow card.

Jake
March 15, 2013

Maybe if this were apple.com you’d get away with saying that, but dropbox already has an android app. Plus, this isn’t dropbox. It’s a separate product owned by the same company. Google is not the only company that publishes games to the play store, just as apple is not the only publisher on the app store. However, since I said from the beginning that you’re a troll and I’ve said everything I need to to prevent other internet goers to not be fooled by you, I bid you a good day. Enjoy your drinks.

I think that it’s amazing!! I really hope that together mailbox can do even more! Add new features and increase everything that we love in this app!

I love Google, but they did let Sparrow die. It’s a sad story, indeed.

March 15, 2013

Let’s just hope they keep the focus on the app itself, instead of just spreading it. Mailbox is fantastic, but it’s still lacking a few little things (geo-fencing, and non-Gmail accounts). Hopefully they focus on fully completing the app before worrying about just porting cross-platform asap. I don’t really care about iOS exclusivity, I just love the app and want it to improve before it gets stretched thin trying to fit Android and WP as well.

March 15, 2013

Agreed. Sparrow and Chrome (both Google products, coincidentally enough), are the most used software on my computer. But, I wouldn’t be mad at all if Drop/Mailbox created an alternative. Especially since I’ve dramatically changed my email habits thanks to this lovely new app.

March 15, 2013

Who knows. They had plans to make an iPad app, and an Android app before. Now that Dropbox bought them, who knows. I’m sure they’ll let everyone know the plans as soon as they figure it out themselves. As long as they add support for iCloud email, i’ll be happy.

March 15, 2013

I realize that one’s own craving
can be a real iffy investment; so where are those angels for Pre-IPO and major
motion picture production investing? We have a nice “product placement advertising reward” for Crowdfunders: To
help raise funds for this movie project, Vahlsing Inc. will accept
“crowdfunding” in exchange for one “product placement advertising” in this
major motion picture “THREE PERSONALITIES” at $150,000 U.S. dollars per each
product; as long as the product you are placing is not “x-rated”. Vahlsing will
give your product a four to five second exposure in our motion picture
production “THREE PERSONALITIES” per deal. There are thirty-four of these
rewards available. Vahlsing will also allow for a crowdfunder reward holder to
resell their “product placement advertising reward” at a higher price to
another individual or entity. This offer is to recognize that certain crowdfunders
do not have a product to campaign; and that they will have the freedom to
resell their reward for profit. vahlsinginc@gmail.com

March 16, 2013

Did I mention a computer? I have “Gmail” on my phone (email client that they provide, which doesn’t have ads), and even email clients on my e-reader.

As for Fourthletter58′s comment above, I am old. And I prefer to be able to read my emails when I’m not online as well as when I am online. After all, sometimes I’m camping or in other areas where Internet access isn’t the best. Plus with data caps on mobile phones, that’s not always the best solution either.

Luca Hammer
March 16, 2013

I love Google too. I use Gmail, Google Calender, Search, Hangouts and many other products. But since the bought Sparrow there wasn’t an substantial update and it was the best mailclient on iOS until mailbox came along.

Bruce Peter Morin
March 16, 2013

Two things, Google didn’t let Sparrow die, Sparrow did. They shouldn’t have sold it but they bought into the corporate greed. As for Dropbox buying Mailbox, well after having the app for a week I deleted it. There were far more issues with it than there were positives, like the inability to deal with multiple messages at the same time or the inability to deal with labels that were already in place. Getting down to a Zero inbox takes discipline and app is not going to help with that. I still know many Mailbox users who are not down to a Zero mailbox. I hope Dropbox can help them but I wish Dropbox would just continue being focused on being the best and most competitive cloud storage company they can be!

Erik Moller
March 16, 2013

Now take my money and start charging for the app so the freetards don’t take up server bandwidth. They’re just poor leeches. Make a Mac client, an iPad client and start charging for the iPhone app. TAKE MY FRIGGIN’ MONEY! Great app. I love Dropbox and everything you do. Just take more of my money. Cheers.

March 17, 2013

Sounds like an interesting addition. Might I make a suggestion in regard to MailBox?
Make sure it plays well with Gmails’ labeling/categories. My experience, thus far is that it plays havoc with any smart labeling or filters and can really make a mess. Not only in Gmail, but in Outlook as well.
Make sure your new tool has the capability to seamlessly integrate, or you will have an expensive brick that no one will want to use.
Just a suggestion.
Cheers!

Hi Drew and Arash!

What’s up?

Have you already checked out “Piikki” for iPhone & iPad?
https://itunes.apple.com/app/piikki/id564127280

Piikki is a simple, yet effective receipt management app for all iOS devices. Among other things, Piikki uses Dropbox for storing & sharing receipts in the cloud.

Piikki would surely make a great subject for a blog post in the Dropbox Blog.

By using Piikki & Dropbox, one can easily share receipts with an accountant through a Dropbox folder. No more scanning receipts at the end of a trip. Just upload receipts to Dropbox as they accumulate.

To get more idea what’s Piikki all about, read this Lifehacker review
http://lifehacker.com/5990896/piikki-organizes-and-uploads-your-receipts

For any questions or promo codes, just email me at jori.kostiainen@haaveinc.com

Let’s be in touch!

Best,

Jori
