Save your screenshots in Dropbox

Posted by Alicia Chen on September 30, 2013

You might already be a fan of Camera Uploads, which beams all the photos you take on your phone and tablet straight to a safe place in your Dropbox. But have you ever wondered, “Why doesn’t Dropbox do that for the screenshots I take on my computer, too?”

Well stop wondering! Starting today, all the screenshots you take can automatically be saved straight to your Dropbox. And on top of that, Dropbox will also create a link to your screenshot and copy it to your clipboard — so your picture’s instantly good to share. Whether you’re capturing screenshots of websites, favorite dog videos, or video calls with your buddy in São Paulo, now Dropbox can help keep your computer a little more organized.

margoscreenshots

As an added bonus for all you Mac users, today’s update also includes a nice little importer that copies your photos from iPhoto directly to your Dropbox.

iPhoto_splash

A lot goes into keeping all your photos in one place and always having them handy to share, and we hope small improvements like these return that time to you. This way you can focus on taking photos and screenshots — and let Dropbox take care of the rest.

Happy snapping!

You are pretty brave to advertize another cloud storage on the dropbox blog XD
Anyways i use both drobox and copy, i found copy pretty nice, expecially for the free space, but is still not as good as dropbox.

September 30, 2013

Surprised it took the kids at Dropbox this long; I did this a while ago on my Mac with this:
Launch Terminal, then:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Dropbox/Public/Screenshots
(From http://osxdaily.com/2011/01/26/change-the-screenshot-save-file-location-in-mac-os-x/)

you have to go fetch the “public link” manually, but at least it’s a direct link to the .png and not a Dropbox page that shows the link (which makes it much easier to post inline screen grabs on websites, message boards, etc.)

Pro user here who has done much testing and evangelizing for going ‘all-in’ on using Dropbox for all photos. Quite simply, Dropbox is the best hosted end-user interface for sharing photos, but it’s not actually easy for Dropbox users to share albums.

One sticking point for going ‘all-in’: Dropbox ignores the work I’ve already done. I already have my albums organized as folders within my local filesystem, yet Dropbox requires me to create proprietary “albums”. I’ve done this once or twice, but it’s redundant; a waste of time. Bitcasa, comparatively, gets this mostly right by automatically display albums by the existing folders.

Hope you can make album creation automatic.

It would be great to have a feature where you push a keystroke combination to drag and select an area of the screen and have it auto-upload and give you a link copied to your clipboard. Also a different button to capture the active window, and another to capture the whole screen (like it currently is).

Also this should be changed so it only puts it in your Dropbox folder if you do Ctrl + Prt Scr.

October 1, 2013

The iPhoto importer is a nice idea, but because it makes a copy of all your photos it’s going to consume a significant amount of disk space. That may not be a big deal if you’ve got a large HD, but it’s a potential gotcha for SSD users.

I currently have my entire iPhoto library in Dropbox, but that’s not the best solution either because simply opening iPhoto causes a bunch of changes that Dropbox then has to sync.

Chris Palmer

I’d add another alternative which can do this – and much more, capturing parts, editing, and uploading to multiple services or pasting directly into Outlook or other Office product.

Greenshot, an open source project:

For basic usage it’s great to see some development going on at Dropbox, but after using Greenshot for half a year, I don’t see any reasons to ditch it.

It is a SSD problem! I have a really tight 250GB SSD on may macbook pro and when i saw the new iphoto function i was really happy! A easy way to backup my entire albums! Easy and fast… but i now have duplicate iphoto library… and on a SSD it is a no-go… a lot of macbook airs still have really small SSDs… 64 and 128GB…

There is a way that those files are synced directly from the iphone library file without having to make duplicates…

I don’t want to go back to ancient external USB backup… but with this duplicate thing… in a matter of days will be a no-go!

craig
October 3, 2013

Thanks for the reply, but I tried opening and closing dropbox and it didn’t work. Also alt+prtscn was also not working but in this case I was after an entire screen capture so ctrl was needed.

However I worked out a fix. Well…more stumbled on it by accident. I opened the bundled snipping tool that comes with windows 7 to see if that had stopped working as well. It hadn’t. And when I closed it I discovered that ctrl+prtscn was now working correctly again.

October 12, 2013

Need a better Windows 8 Application.
Need to update the Android Application. The UI leaves a LOT to be desired, and an option for a Black theme would be most welcome, for those of us who use phones with AMOLED screens.
Also want an option to limit upload size to 2048px on longest/tallest end, like most every other cloud storage service with automatic Upload (SkyDrive on Windows Phone, Google+ on Android/iOS, Flickr on iOS, etc.).
Also, the service starts at only 2GB storage, and some of us have much better things to do than evangelize tech to our friends. At least an option for a $9.99/yr 10GB storage would be nice.
Otherwise we’re better off just using the services we already get for free with platforms, which offer much more storage for literally no effort – with much cheaper paid options.
I was thinking DropBox would already have something comparable to Photo Streams/Shared Photo Streams by now, but I guess not.
With Windows 8.1′s improved SkyDrive support coming soon, maybe it’s just time to write off these “alternatives” and just stick the the built-in offering…?

I have a dropbox account using my work email- I very seldom use. I do not want to use this to share files for my study partner. So I created a personal dropbox with my computer at work. I have a Dropbox folder in my C drive here at work. So I go online and try to log in to Dropbox- I cannot log in the round thing keeps spinning. Of course I email Dropbox. No response. Two days later a rep from Dropbox emails me at work and wants me to create a business account. How did this person get my email? I ask this person the same question and you want me to upgrade when you cannot even respond to my inquiries? And how did you get my email address? Now I feel I got cut off because I STILL CANNOT log in and I have emailed them. STILL NO RESPONSE. I am asking Dropbox to walk me through. Can anyone with some professional courtesy respond. For those that truly loves this thing-please help.

I have lost an enormous amount of videos and pictures during the upload and am unable to restore no matter what your advice is. I have been asking for help for weeks. Tonight was the first time someone replied and I already told DB that I DID EVERYTHING YOU RECOMMENDED. Now it is coming close to that 30 days and a lifetime of memories are lost. Unforgivable. I am devastated…and the worst part is YOU CAN DO SOMETHING TO RETRIEVE THESE THINGS…YOU JUST DO NOT WANT TO. You CAN take the time and contact us verbally. you just DO NOT WANT TO. It is out there somewhere…YOU JUST DON’T CARE. It’s NOT your videos and pictures that were lost.

I started a Drop Box account, but my daughter who is running the tech part of my blog to interface word press with my followers emails had previously installed something else and told me to remove Drop Box, which I did. However, now when I turn on my desk top, the Drop Box sign up always comes up prior to anything else which is a gross imposition on my patience and ludicrous as well as rude – because it is my decision to not continue AND I DO NOT NEED A SALES REMINDER TO INSTALL IT AGAIN WHEN THE DECISION WAS MADE TO REMOVE IT. This is only aggravating but is not a courteous way to treat anyone. And I have made numerous calls to Drop Box asking for their help to stop this, but have not a any response. for my blog address to know I am intelligent enough to have listened to my brilliant daughter: http://www.the5thestate.net

October 25, 2013

Clearly you have an issue with your local PC not properly uninstalling the Dropbox client. Have your brilliant daughter have a look at it and clean out the registry (assuming you are using Windows). For every experience like yours, there are hundreds, if not thousands of Dropbox users who are thrilled with the reliability and security of Dropbox over the other cloud storage providers.

You should take a few minutes to chill and stop bashing Dropbox until you’re certain it’s not something you or your PC caused.

In the beginning I did think DropBox was good, but then it started to upload photos and videos in the background and files I did upload from my Android Gallery did ended up in same folder even they was organised in folders/albums in my phone. I then did remove them they was just hidden and then it was too many files in the folder I was not able to remove it permanently, so the task of removing all 2000 files by hand made me angry, now I plan to revoke my account to get rid of the files even I has 52 Gb storage to use on DropBox.

I would also need the option to have this folder in the Public, to directly share my photo on the web, in a blog, in a forum.
I don’t know why we don’t have it in the preferences.
Same as I would love to have the Camera Uploads, in another chosen folder.

I don’t think it’s a problem and Dropbox team did not want to allow us to directly point to the picture. (like imageshack, dropimage, etc)
Because, anyway, I can manually move it to my public folder and share it.
It just take me 4 more clicks.
It would be great to have it in 1 click, with DB.
Thanks

October 27, 2013

I don’t know if you will read this. Maybe it will help.
Instead of logging online, to get to your DB perso, when at work,
you could simply share one folder with your partner. (and he is also creating his own dropbox)
Anything you put in this folder, is automatically synchronized with your work-DB and partner-DB.

And even if you want also to have only this at home, you could have your home-DB account. And you also share the same folder with your home account.

Thierry
October 27, 2013

Please, add options to choose the folder where to copy the screenshots. For example the Public folder. It would be great to directly able to share on my blog, or forum.

Same would be great for the Camera uploads. I would prefer to directly have them in the /Photos/ folder, so I don’t need to move them again manually.

We all need to save things and it is nice to have an app/program like dropbox where we can keep them. Although it is possible to send files as email attachments but even they need to be downloaded and saved on computer. We all like different kinds of screensaver and it is nice to have a storage box where we can keep our favorite ones.

Worst update ever. It would be one thing if it just sent a copy of the screenshot to my Dropbox, but instead it completely stops you from being able to paste the screen shot into any thing that needs more than the text of the link. This means that it’s also setting these screen shots to be viewable to anyone with the link.

BTW, I told it not to turn this feature on, but the next time I restarted my mac, it was turned on by default. This is a *HUGE* breach of privacy…

I just disabled it. I wish I had been offered the chance to REFUSE this screenshot option before it was enabled. Puts screenshots where I don’t want them, uses up my Dropbox memory, syncs them when I don’t want them synced — A terrible feature, and bad idea to force it on people without giving the choice. Same with photos — I DO NOT want my photos synced — have to disable that too. Stop giving unwanted features that end up being more work for me !!

It should be easier to disable and it should, in my opinion, show up on your desktop AND in dropbox if it is on.

Simple DropBox used
February 6, 2014

I have no idea was this was enabled for my account, The idea seems useful, but all I have in my automatically created screenshots folder are screenshots made when I accidentally touched the Print Screen button. SO until now this feature means mostly that I have one more maintenance chore in DropBox: to regularly delete those accidentally uploaded screenshots. So I disabled the feature. It’s a shame, because it’s a nice feature’ and could be useful if I could choose to have only the Ctrl+Print Screen functionality. I don’t hit Ctrl+PrintScreen functionality often.

And while I’m at it: I would also like to be able to switch off the doc/docx online viewing functionality, or at least to be able to get a link that allows sharing such files directly,so whoever gets the link downloads the file, and doesn’t get it “sort of displayed” in the online viewer. The reason is that this viewer doesn’t fully support file type, and often shows something quite different from what I wrote (e.g., no embedded MathType formulas, and right justified and right to left text displayed as left justified and left to right text. Dropping and rearranging text is not only ugly, it sometimes changes the meaning of the text, so this viewer stands in the way of using dropbox to share such files.

Ed Croom

February 17, 2014

This is very annoying. You’ve hijacked my Ctrl-Printscreen combination, which was already doing what I wanted it to. And disabling this does not restore the functionality of Ctrl-Printscreen in the Windows Snipping tool.

If I wanted my screenshot in Dropbox, I’d save it to Dropbox. What were you thinking?

Eve Jacob
February 17, 2014

Guest (whoever you are)–how can I put this eloquently? DUH. Based on the dozens (hundreds? I’ve stopped scrolling) of comments asking how to turn it off, wouldn’t you assume that we’ve tried that already?

There IS no option to turn it off (that’s the FIRST PLACE I went when I realized how irritating it was–and I’m sure it was the first place basically everyone else went, too). I combed through “Settings” for 20 minutes to no avail. I only found this because I was searching for help.

But if you want to cruise around leaving rude, presumptive comments with gratuitous question-mark usage, be my guest.

If you’ve unchecked this option under ‘Preferences’ but still can’t use the screenshot button properly (i.e. you cannot paste screenshots to save as images) simply use another form of screen shotting – press ‘Print Screen’ button or press ‘Alt’ and Print Screen’ or use the snipping tool.

Thank you, Dropbox, for installing this feature on my computer without asking me if I wanted it, because it’s so great how could anyone not want it? And it’s not like I bought a personal computer so that I could configure the way I want to use it personally, after all, we’re really all the same and our computers should be configured the same, too. And isn’t it the companies out there who know best how we should be using our computers, and what software is on them? I just don’t understand all you haters out there who say this is annoying or who think Dropbox installed a feature on your computer without your permission in order to up the data you store on their system just to increase their profits! They only have your best interest in mind, and deep down you know it. So admit it, this is the best feature ever and you’re really glad they didn’t bother you before asking to reconfigure your computer. I just hope that some day Dropbox can apply their wisdom to all the software they use on my computer. That way I wouldn’t have to get all confused with how my computer should work, and how I should configure it, it would work the Dropbox way. And their is no better way. If you don’t believe me, just ask Dropbox!

I never gave permission to Dropbox to do this to me. My PrintScreen key is MINE to setup and use how I want on my PERSONAL computer. You have no right to automatically hijack it without my explicit permission. My computer is my PERSONAL computer, not Dropbox’s computer. How dare you do this to people??? Someone out there is reading this and knows what you are doing and will take appropriate legal actions to protect us – the consumers. I will file a formal complaint with BBB or whatever other place I need to. You need to be exposed for intrusive business practices. It’s not right. Useful feature or not, it’s for me to decide what is useful on MY computer. If you want access to the features on my computer, you need to ask for permission.

Thanks, Eve. It worked for me right away. Running a MAC. Sorry to hear it didn’t work for others.

Who the fuck gave you permission to hijack my PrintScreen button???? I happen to use it quite a lot with an application that I like. Congratulations Dropbox, you just earned an uninstall and a permanent ban from this customer.

I have to say this is totally annoying: I need to prepare for my classes and don’t need/want my print screens “saved” by you (and not by Word). Horrible feature. Lose it, and THEN tell us how to get rid of it on our computers!

I love this new feature! And for the duds below, it is an “optional” feature! Get smart and figure out the settings button on your Dropbox app!

Screenshots is not equal to photos. There are two different options. Unselect both!

it amazes me how ENTITLED and SPECIAL people think they are. Either use it or don’t but stop being so LAZY and ANGRY over the development of an optional feature.

I agree with the last two comments. First of all, it is a pretty useful feature. the problem is computer should be sold to an individual after an exam is given by him/her. They have bought a computer and most of them have it in their native language, still unable to open somewhere called Preference or Option and read it in their own language. That takes 3 seconds, logging in here and writing a comment takes about a minute. Now the smartest of them writes; No, it took me 2 seconds to write my comment.
