I’d like to start off by thanking all of you who voted for us the past month for the Best Internet App Crunchie (and special brownie points to those of you whom voted every day!), because your hard work paid off. We won the award for Best Internet App of 2009!

We were pretty stoked to face off against some really baller competitors: Yelp, Posterous, Animoto, Groupon, and MOG. Everyone at Dropbox uses all of these apps and we’d like to give them a round of applause for their awesome work. However, we’re extremely flattered that you guys chose Dropbox from such an impressive pool to receive this award.

A huge thank you goes out to every single one of our (now 4!) millions of users, our rockstar investors, and the rest of our impressive team for making Dropbox the way it is today. While 2009 was certainly a rollercoaster for all of us, you can bet that we have plenty of stuff in store for 2010 that will make 2009 look like the preseason.

Those of you who were around last year may recall us entering the Crunchies and winning runner-up for best startup of 2008.  We have all of you to thank for winning that honor, and we’d like to ask you for that same favor this year.

We’ve got a holiday gift for you all: A new stable build! The 0.7 series (code name: Blue Yoshi) is sporting lots of new stuff including performance fixes, toolbar button support in Mac OS X, and LAN sync. LAN sync lets you transfer files between computers on your local network, which results in some ridiculously fast syncing. I’m sure those of you out there who manage several computers in one location will love this.

As always, we’ll update all of your Dropboxes to the latest stable build in phases, so don’t worry if you haven’t been upgraded yet. If you’re impatient, you can go ahead and download the build now.

We were also recently chosen for a 2009 Editors’ Choice Award by Macworld! These awards (or Eddys) are given to the best Mac products of the past year. What do you do/what’s your claim to fame at dropbox?

I spend my days on the web side of Dropbox. If you’re using anything.dropbox.com, odds are good I coded it or broke it or fixed it at some point in time. Ostensibly, my claim to fame is being engineer numero uno (after the founders). Within Dropbox, I think my claim to fame is probably my ability to unintentionally generate company-wide catch phrases. I haven’t figured out whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing yet.

Since you’re the first employee, joining Dropbox must’ve been a difficult decision. What made you decide to join?

It was definitely a tough decision. At the time, I was the biggest Dropbox fanboy ever–I’d kept an eye on the product since I saw Drew’s original screencast, and I’d known Arash since before he started at MIT. However, I already had a really cool job in New York City I really liked, and the prospect of flying across the country to join this tiny, unproven company seemed almost too risky to consider. In the end I think I went with my gut that this idea could be a great, and that getting in on the ground floor would expose me to the startup world in a way I couldn’t get anywhere else. Two years in, and my gut seems right so far.

What OSs do you prefer?

For coding purposes, Ubuntu 100%. Linux has its charms. When it comes to less-serious business, Windows. My (ancient) desktop machine at home triple-boots Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

Was Windows 7 your idea?

Yes!

Current favorite apps?

Canabalt and Words with Friends, both on the iPhone. With their powers combined, it’s impossible for me to be bored.

How’d you get into programming?

My first programming memory goes back to futzing with LOGO on the Apple IIgs machines at my elementary school and being told you could make games with it. I remember wishing I knew how they got the little turtle to make Oregon Trail. My first “real” coding experience was a few years later, when I discovered the web, or more specifically, Geocities. I learned HTML and Javascript solely to trick out my first homepage. I went to Computer Camp after 8th grade, where I found out I actually had an aptitude for coding (apparently, few 14-year-olds grok pointers) and the rest is history.

I hear you’re working on a rap about Python. Care to share any highlights?

These aren’t the highlights. These are all I have written. Basically just punchlines to unwritten verses. But if you insist…

What do you do in your freetime?

When I moved to San Francisco, I shipped my drum kit out, too. It’s now set up in the corner of the Dropbox office, and I try to bang on it anytime the office is empty (a rare occurrence). I’ve also got a keyboard and microphone at home that I jam on when not at Dropbox, and I’m working on picking up a bass guitar to add to my arsenal. In general you’d be hard pressed to find me not doing something music related if I can be. I carry
headphones with me 24/7.

What’s in your recently played list?

This question should be “What’s on your Zune?” (yeah, I’m part of the Social). The most recent albums I’ve thrown on there are Wale’s “Attention Deficit,” Mayer Hawthorne’s “A Strange Arrangement,” John Mayer’s “Battle Studies,” and The Dirty Projectors’ “Bitte Orca.” All definitely worth checking out, especially “Two Doves” on that last one. Haunting.

What cool things are you working on right now?

We’ve got some heretofore unannounced things coming on the web that I’m super-excited about. Unfortunately, I can’t share them with you, so you’ll just have to wait and see! Half the fun of secrets is keeping them.

The web team rolled out a few sweet changes yesterday that I’d like to share with you:

First, we greatly improved our web uploader. We’ll be the first to admit that it was a little janky in the past, but I’m pretty sure that you’ll now find that it’s a lot easier to use and understand. In addition to a few design tweaks, this new uploader also provides a bit more insight into transfers.

Second, we added a calendar feature to the recent events feed so it’s easy for you to hop around to a specific date rather than needing to spam-click ‘Next’ over and over again to get to the date you’re looking for (Speaking of which, you can also now set a dd/mm/yy date format if you’d like via the account page). More importantly, we added the ability to view entire changes on your feed. You no longer have to scratch your head when you see “… and 8300 other files”!

Lastly, the biggest announcement this week is the launch of our new feature request center, Votebox. While it’s true that the team reads every single forum post and email for feature requests, we often found it hard to keep all this input organized. That’s why we launched Votebox, which is a way for you to be involved in Dropbox’s development. Using Votebox is easy. All you need is a Dropbox account. You can vote for ideas that get posted on Votebox, or post your own ideas and allow people to vote on those. Go ahead, give Votebox a try.

As many of you Linux zealots are well aware, Ubuntu 9.10 got released two weeks ago and offers some snazzy improvements over 9.04. While it’s true that 9.10 bundled in a certain syncing app with its release, we just wanted to take this chance to remind y’all that Dropbox works awesomely with 9.10 (…and Windows …and Mac ;D) without any hitches!

The Karmic repository is up and running and ready to add to your apt sources:

Other stuff: We initially opted for 3.1 because API methods related to saving videos were not available on 3.0. This meant that videos taken within the app would be permanently lost in the event of a flaky/slow internet connection. This happened to us enough in testing that we felt it wasn’t a risk we wanted to expose to our users.

That said, Will, the maestro of our iPhone app, deftly crafted a solution for this problem. The result is what you see in the app store today! Will also says that there will be plenty of bug fixes to come in the future, as well as a huge feature push when 1.5 arrives. Please feel free to let us know in the forums how the app is working out for you!

PS. I know we’ve had some heartache in the past, but to those of you who rated us down for not having 3.0 support the first time around… could you maybe find it in your hearts to give us another chance? We’ve changed, we promise! This time we’ll be good!

Dropbox works just fine with Snow Leopard!  There have been some huge performance improvements and those ugly folder icons are now gone too!  If you’ve upgraded, you shouldn’t notice many changes to the service.  In fact, you probably won’t notice anything at all because Dropbox will auto-update itself within the next week and work properly on Snow Leopard without any problems.  There’s no need to re-download it .

2 million users!

Isn’t that graph awesome? Some of you may have already read the TechCrunch article, but it’s true!  Dropbox has reached 2 million users.  We’re really excited to welcome all of our new users who are just beginning to try out Dropbox, and even more flattered by those of you who have stuck around since the beginning.  It’s breathtaking to look back and think that we were at about 30,000 users at this point last year (and the team was only 8 people rather than the 17 strong today).  As we continue to grow, we promise to continue providing the same syncing goodness you’ve come to expect from us, as well as many more awesome features and poetry contests .
