The Dropbox Android App!

Posted by Jon Ying on March 22, 2010

In Dropbox’s two year history, we’ve had some ardent fans salivating over the next killer Dropbox feature. We love these people!

Our first huge feature following (and birthplace of our Dropbox poetry tradition) was our Linux version, which was soon followed by the highly anticipated iPhone app. However, we’d like to think that the fervor behind a certain upcoming feature speaks for itself:

“Android app, please, please, please!! Yes, Yes!”
“Android! Android! Android! Android! :D
“Yes Android please! I need this app, like a grindylow needs water.”
“and i need this app like desert needs the rain.”
“DO WANT! ANDROID DROPBOX … YES YES YES1!!!”
“Desperatly want to complete my assimilation by the droid.”
“I WILL SELL MY BABY DAUGHTER FOR ANDROIDBOX”

You get the point. So without further ado, I’m proud to share some info and a few screenshots of the Dropbox Android app that we’ve been working on.

Access your Dropbox on the go – All the contents of your Dropbox are available for viewing. You can even stream music and movies in your Dropbox straight to your Android device.

Make edits to your files and sync them back to Dropbox – Any changes you make to your files will sync back up to your Dropbox.

Download files for offline viewing – Add files to ‘Favorites’ and they’ll be accessible at any time.

Upload files and sync them to your Dropbox – Take a photo, shoot a video, or upload some audio from your Android phone and email its public link to a friend in less than a minute.

Share links to files in your Dropbox – Yes! Any file in your Dropbox!

And now for some eye candy (these were taken on a Motorola Droid):

Once you log in, you’ll see all the files in your Dropbox…

Hold down on any file or folder for a few seconds, and you’ll get a nice context menu:

Press the menu button to bring up the …menu.

But wait, there’s more! Look what happens when you press ‘Upload’!

Hmm, but what if I want to take a photo/video from my gallery and add it to Dropbox?

Yup, this app will be available for all flavors of Android within the next couple months. So sit tight (and don’t sell your baby daughters), your zeal will be fed soon enough :)

Do us a favor and help spread the word! Digg us up!

Really niceh. I think that will be interesting also to select the Folders as Favorite for "offline" works.

Because, if I have a folder with 200 photos, and I want to have all this photos in offline, it's horrible to select as favorties two hundred times.

    Thanks
  • Susunzco
While you can share and take photos from the Dropbox app on both iOS and Android, reader Java-Princess shows us that on Android.
  • Vucinicm56
Thanks for the feedback. As long as you open the text file from within
Dropbox every time, your text file should be the latest version.
However, there is a bug in the current version of Dropbox (to be fixed
in the next release, out Real Soon Now), where changes in files that
leave them at the same file-size aren't re-downloaded from the server to
    the phone. cincin nikah

Wonderful leap forward.. I agree with Preisl, should be able to favorite folders as signing each file as favorite is a pain.

Also, noticed that when you have a favorite file and change the name of the folder from another computer, it will no longer be a favorited file. kinda annoying.

I just got a Kindle Fire and wanted to install Dropbox but it's not in the Amazon App Store?! Please send it in to them!

I'll just side load it but I'm sure many people won't know how to do that.

any chance we could set a folder as synced so that I can drop a file from my PC and know next time i'm on wifi my tablet will sync and it will be available offline?
  • nice to see it
  • Cief007
No options to Sync EVERYTHING!!!!, when you have a large # of files, its a pain having to go thru each file to download to the device. There should be an "option" to "Sync ALL" when desired. I've read the a this is not "offered" for limitations such as having the phone "sync-ing" all the time and wasting battery life. But why not offer it as an option to do so when desired? Once synced, them stop the app. Seems simple enough....
  • Thanks in advanced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Yes Pleaase!
  • Thank You for this!  I've been looking for a way to transfer my Android photos to my computer.

The Dropbox app for the Android mobile platform is a solid start for an
app that prides itself on its ability to do seamless syncing. However,
the addition of a few more essential features would make this the
    ultimate app to have.

  • Drop box is a great product! We have not been able to make use of it full potential as we still pay for Bandwidth in our country.
  • I found it a real shame that I cant preview any images before I download them. Highly inconvenient not to be able to view images in a gallery setting instead of a list.

  • Dominik Vienna
    Hi!

I dowloaded the app yesterday from the Android Market, but I don't have a "Add To Favorite" option? If I click on a folder for two seconds the only options are:

    "Open"
    "Share a link"

If select the context menu in a folder, i have this options:

    Search, New, Upload
    Refresh, Help, Settings

and not as shown in the pictures:
    Favorites, Settings, Help,
    Refresh, Search, Upload

I bought an 8GB SD-hc card and i actually want to have all my files synchronized even on the phone to that SD card...

    Thanks a lot,
    Dominik
  • Mat
You still can't download all the files in the specific folder for offline viewing.. "Favorites" menu is not there! :/
  • Marcus Wolschon
    Did you try
    http://www.androidpit.com/en/a...
as a compensation for the shortcommings?
I'm still working on better behavior in case of connection errors but it
works for me. I recently added a new NC-style file-manager.
  • Marcus Wolschon
The NC-style file manager is now also avaliable as a standalone app.

I am new to Dropbox but found it by accident when I was testing Live Linux (recent ones) CDs.
I used to write a short comment on each Live CD and when I see a new feature would allocate somewhat arbitrary (my marking scale) points as a plus feature.
When I saw Dropbox in several of the Live CDs (Fedora, Ubuntu) in the internet section, I was curious but left it for another day to investigate.
Then finally I investigated it (you were promoting for school kids) and being myself a teacher in the University, the question why not for me and my students.
    Presto!
I am hooked to the Dropbox now as an educational tool.
Thank you for that and another reason.
I am depositing Linux Live CDs (unfortunately not DVDs- I advocate light version of OS instead of the Gorilla Versions) in the box for my Linux friends to test and try.
All in all it is a Linux Depository for Testing and Trying not a Repository..
The download spread are awfully slow in this part of the world and this a simple remedy.
You do the synchronizing I do the depositing (Eggs -not Easter yet) on the Nest.
We have a bird in this country who deposit eggs on another type of birds nest.
I am a lazy bird who does not want to look after (intellectual property of mine) my laid eggs!
I am trying to collect enough MiB (at least 4 GiB for me to deposit a Linux Big Image once in a while-for example games DVD) by promoting Dropbox.
I sent a virtual spam (to all my contacts) and some of them thought somebody has hacked my email. Never done that before!
Most of them are afraid of Dropbox (I have lost my sanity, they think in my old age) but I keep brainwashing (with coconut oil which is very expensive-we use it in anointing in our New Year ) them (at least I get all my friends together and some Mibs in the process) and with my humour, it seems to be working especially with younger counterparts.

I have found one problem that is unique to me.
I have up to 5 operating systems in the same Linux Box with different home partitions(with the same name-and same password) an they do not seem to synchronize the Dropbox which is in my home partition.
Linux distributions are finicky when it comes to sharing unless I ROOT Myself (which is not healthy at my age) every time I BOOT.
Apart from that Dropbox makes me lighter at the dinner parties.
Happy Christmas and New Year to all of you.
If you have some spare bones or MiBs please drop at my box (not the Cricket Box-I am not playing Cricket now).
    Thanks.
  • Gotta love the Droid and all the potential that it has..
  • How do you sync with your android device and how do you choose folders?
  • Huvrik
    Turkeyphant asked:
How do you sync with your android device and how do you choose folders?

Turkeyphant, did you find answers to that? I have a HTZ Desire Z, and I cannot find a way to get to the parent folder, once the folders' content is shown.

    Brilliant news.

Would you--Dropbox staff--mind posting a QR code on the site when the download becomes available? This is, in my mind, the fastest way for me to get a software package. I browse with a keyboard (I like full-size keyboards), see something on the screen, and only have to hold the phone up to the screen for the application to download.

Food for thought. Thanks for all the hard work (and space). : )
  • Great news.
Just please don't forget that some Android phones have 320x240 screen resolution ( HTC Tattoo, SE Xperia X10 Mini and Mini Pro) anf still thier owners would like to use apps just like other people do. Many application developers seem not to belive in that, even Google is among them.

  • Mredamon
holding down on a folder does not produce a menu... any way to change this? I'd like to be able to select a whole folder to download to phone
  • Benjamin Crist
Would love to see a sync all feature to manually sync entire dropbox, sync just one folder and auto sync features as well!
  • Nlandas
Even if you don't make the Android dropbox autosync at least give us a button to press to tell it to perform a sync. At least let it do multiple uploads instead of one file at a time.

It would also be nice if photos/videos could automatically go up ala photobucket. I'm really disappointed as the client is basically unusable for anything serious.
  • Marcus
I can't find that "galleryshare"-View nor any "favorites"-folder that are synced.
In fact, it's upload+download single files only.
I can't even select multiple photos to upload. (Well I can select them in the galery after "upload photo" but there is no way to do anything then.)
  • ben_bayram
    hello

It's not anything like you show on this blog. No "share picture" dialogue, no import function... Downloading is almost nonexistent on my LG Ally. So far, my experience with dropbox for Android is it's CRAP!
  • Miceno
I am eager to see the application!! thank you
  • My knowledge about Dropbox Android is now a notch higher because of your blog. Thanks.
  • Lekkoman
    for Symbian??

    hey guys,
I would be happy if you could develop an APP for the new Samsung BADA-devices.
    kind regards
  • Yeah, I would also love that.
  • Please stop your crappy keyword SPAMming all over the net. Have you no shame?
  • So I'm comparing my screen (dropbox on Nexus One running Android 2.1) and there is no favorites in the context menu! no context menu whatsoever for folders. I want to be able to sync a folder without downloading all the files in it.
  • Marcus
same here om Nexus One and Android 2.2.
  • So I'm comparing my screen (dropbox on Nexus One running Android 2.1) and there is no favorites in the context menu! no context menu whatsoever for folders. I want to be able to sync a folder without downloading all the files in it.
  • derrapf
    Also for me!
I don't want to upload every single file. I would like to be able to select a complete folder to upload eg. the DCIM folder.
And also very important: Dropbox for Android should work like on the PC!
Means: When I copy some files or folders to the dropbox directory, using any filemanager, dropbox should automatically sync them. Or at least there should be a "refresh" Button which syncs all files in the sdcard/dropbox folder and its subfolders.
  • Marcus Wolschon
    You can do that already.
    http://www.google.com/url?q=ht...

Doesn't work great due to limited API (habe to use modified-timestamp instead of hashes and no delta-sync) but it generally works.
  • Tony
There is no way to specify a folder to be synchronized on your android, and the file upload will not take any arbitrary file, only photos, vids, audio and text. This app leaves a lot to be desired.
  • mlcarr
using it on my incredible and it is good. Can not send a link via email directly.but must copy the link and paste it into a new email. Otherwise it is great

Why not reward your ardent fans that put money into your pockets with preferential treatment when it comes to limited beta? I'm pretty annoyed that I missed the hour-long window before the beta program "filled up" (most likely by many free users).
  • 16bitgeek
Yes! That is exactly what I've been after. I just bought a HTC Desire today so that combined with this Dropbox app definitely makes the whole thing worthwhile.
    Looking forward to it!

How long are we going to wait? There are already 3rd party apps for dropbox in market! Gurry up guys!
  • Nick
    how about now?
  • OK, I Dugg it, and apparently so did 706 other people (as of this writing), so when are we going to get an idea of this Android App release? There is clearly a lot of desire for this app.

I just started working and I realise just how useful Dropbox can be if I had it on my Android. I have to use alternatives that just don't make the cut. Please release Dropbox soon. Even as a Beta is fine. As a student I never saw the need to have Dropbox on the go but now I do.
  • HiFaraz
Thanks! I'm really looking forward to this.

Please compile this to work on large screens too. This will be a killer app on the Entourage Edge!
  • As a "pro" subscriber, I would like to add my $0.02 (or rather $99) to this by saying "Please move swiftly on this". Dropbox App access as described in this blog posting would be so incredibly invaluable to me on my Android phones.

Do the edits happen in the Dropbox client itself, in a third-party program, or both?

Also, will we have control over how a file gets displayed? I can't see my HTML templates with the iPhone version because it tries to render .HTML files in a WebView. All I want to see is the text. =)

would love to be a beta tester (HTC Desire)

    Gosh, yes! Android pleeeease.
I used to struggle through rsync and ssh tunnels on my own server, but I never had a fat enough pipe and couldn't develop for all the client OS's I used; great job chaps.

Will it work like dropbox does on desktops and laptops?

    I love you, Dropbox.

I would love to help test this. I have a Nexus One, not rooted or hacked in any way, with the latest Google OS. Please contact me if you'd like an alpha/beta tester!
  • Wayne
    I will be an alpha/beta tester ;)
  • Now with Apple politics going haywire, Android needs this more than before. My Nexus One is eagerly waiting for Dropbox...
  • I just started using Dropbox and it is being really great!
If I can add some more requests to the wishing list, it would be a porting to Symbian phones and to Maemo.

    Cheers
  • I really hope this app has support to upload any file present on the SD card memory! From what I am seeing of it now all you can upload are pictures and video taken by the camera, audio files, and text.

I've got a Microsoft Office program on my G1 phone with T-mobile, and am constantly updating expense reports, balance sheets and my company's various literature on-the-go with my phone. It would be great if I could simply navigate the folder system of the SD card and choose any file (such as a word or excel document) and upload it. Really hoping you decide to include such a feature in the final release, I'd rather not have to buy the paid version "Droidbox," which has that feature.
  • arm-c
How about a version for the Nokia n900?

Ok, SugarSync is definitely not the same thing. And it is definitely not as polished or easy to use. I'll stay with Dropbox thanks.

Now I'm in stalker mode watching and waiting for Dropbox for Android. Hurry hurry! (c:

I love dropbox. It's like using a flashdrive, without the risk of losing it. I use it to sync Windows files at work with my Mac at home. The dropbox folder shows up in your My Documents folder. Transfer files like it was a plugged-in flashdrive, and it's free. If you sign up for dropbox through a referral, you get an extra 250 meg of storage for free. Here is a referral link: Get Dropbox
  • Jody
I'd love to see some feature parity with SugarSync, since I'm sure you're looking for feature requests.

Let me play music from my Music folder. (c: Also it'd be cool to have some sort of preview option for files I'm browsing like the Evernote app.

Hope its done, or in beta soon! I can't wait to use it!
  • Phase3d
Thank you Dropbox for making a Android version of your great service! It is a most welcomed addition for sure. Thanks again!

    I love you, Dropbox.

  • dmitri evseev
Please please please make the Android app compatible with large-screen android devices such as the Entourage eDGe!!!!!
  • arcanewinter
I wonder, would this also allow me to run Dropbox from the sdcard when I mount it to a computer, or is that entirely within the realm of Dropbox Portable?

It would be great to access files from my Dropbox via the phone, but for running programs I'd need to run Dropbox on a computer, so this would be great if it installed files for both. Dropbox Portable gets hairy when Dropbox pushes out a new version.
  • Nicolai
    Very awesome indeed!

come on, I'm gonna have to freeze myself, like Cartman.

Really nice, but any plans for a Symbian client? I am attached to my Nokia (or is it the other way around?) :)

Would be thankful for a reply.

  • Awesome guys. Thanks a lot, now I can switch from my iPhone to Android without doubts :)

Universal Search OS has been doing this before dropbox in 2005, it's nothing new. It searches blogs and picture sharing sites without having to sync first to the cloud. It's a superior technology i've been using for years. http://www.gaviri.com/

Wow - this is such good news. I've used dropbox for some time now and will definitely upgrade to a paid plan once I can sync these files to my droid phone. Thanks all of you for working on this.

Next couple of months? What? How about doing a beta release?
  • Zac
Looks good, exponentially increase the usefulness of my N1. Already got the spot waiting for it on my homescreen.... Hoping a "few months" is just a gimmick to make us all love them when it comes out...eheemm hurry up ehhem...next week? A few months would be excruciating...would have rather NOT seen the screenshots if that's how far away it is....

Bad ass service, keep up the good work. Hoping "link to any file" is released on the desktop at the same time as the Andi App

Sweet, Android!!! And with offline viewing and editing! :)
With MP3 streaming I guess it's time to upgrade my storage capacity!
  • TJ
    thank you!
  • Huwaw! This is a great development. But what about us WinMo users??? Please Please Please!!!
  • Rick
Perhaps the title of this post should have been "The Dropbox Android App is coming in a couple of months!"? Ah, but that won't be as catchy as this, I get it.
  • WSA
...what about an app for palm webOS?
  • Janne
Great! When do we get a Nokia N900/Maemo5/Meego/QT4.6 version?
  • This is very cool, but will the Android DropBox app sync files to one's SD card? Since Android users usually have an SD card the Dropbox app should automatically sync files to the SD card as if it was any other computer. In this case there should be an option to only sync while on WiFi.
  • Marcus Wolschon
The "official" Dropbox App does not do that.
It only allows to browse remote files.
I have an app that does that but it still has issues
if connections break up in mid-transit and similar.
Mostly due to improper error-handling in the Dropbox
    Android SDK.

Would you be able to upload any files from your Android handset? Or are you just allowing Photos, Video, Music & "Text Files". Like I have all kinds of documents (Word, PDF, Excel) on my Nexus One....can I share those?
  • Your testing on the Droid, if you need some beta testers please see anyone @ http://www.droidforums.net
  • Awesome, can't wait to see this for the Nexus One!
  • Me too. I love my Nexus One! and can't wait to see some Dropbox action on it. I love me some Dropbox.

    Wahooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Finally! Can't wait!

There is a Dropbox app in the Android Market already, which appears to just link to the mobile version of Dropbox.
  • Looking good, can't wait!
  • missyQ
pls keep htc tattoo users in mind too!!!!!!!!! cheers!!
  • Please, don't forget QVGA users (HTC Tattoo) :)
  • Cool, now I can use Dropbox on my mobile but not on my computer (Ubuntu with KDE)!
  • jimnutt
You can use Dropbox on Ubuntu w/KDE, works just fine. It just requires slightly more work to set up. Download and unpack the linux client, then run ~/.dropbox-dist/dropbox. It should prompt for the initial setup and login, then put an icon in the system tray. For that matter, I use dropbox in linux virtual machines with no X windows at all and it works fine (that's quite a bit more trouble to setup).
  • When you make it available please don't forget the alternative markets ( like AndAppStore ), not everyone has Google Market on their device :).
  • Dan
    Hooray!
  • Ron
Awesome, I'm looking forward for this, and I hope it will be release soon.
  • Very awesome! can we choose folders to synchronize?
  • Clycio
Where is the dorpbox real app for android??? It is only a link for mobile web page #fail

  • androides
It seems a great and useful app :) We are waiting for! Did you see that app in android market? It seems a non-oficial client for dropbox but he registered the name "dropbox" http://bubiloop.com/android-li...
  • Rasmus Eeg
    Awesome! Can't wait... *cries*
  • Dave G
Sweet, one of the quotes up there ("I need this app like a grindylow needs water") is mine!
  • That's pretty cool !
  • Give me a break Dropbox, we don't want f*cking screenshots, we want an app!!!

How much longer are we going to have to wait? This is a joke if you compare how long the iPhone app has been out there for.

You have underestimated the Android platform and the open source community, you're just as commercial as Apple these days. A shame really.
  • Divan
Even my two-year-old son is less childish than you are.
  • And your two-year-old son is probably more tech savvy than you. Bless him (not his iPhone user dad).
  • Divan
Like you, I am an Android user. Unlike you, I'm not crying and making a scene about it. You can spew whatever you want about open-source zealotry and yell obscenities at Dropbox, but that's probably not going to motivate them to get it out faster, wouldn't you think?
  • Perhaps you live in a world without deadlines and targets. Dropbox should have been available on Android months ago as it was for the iPhone. Software companies didn't care about Android because they couldn't see it as a revenue source like the Apple store.
At the end of the day it's all about money.
  • Mergio Sontini
Are a paying customer, I wonder?
  • pmccann
Oh please: step back and get a sense of your own sense of entitlement. It's extraordinarily ugly.
  • This is great! I've been using the mobile site for downloading stuff, but I can't wait for all the added functionality! Thank you!
  • It looks sweet! I wish you'd point out what you did with the Android app that you couldn't do with the iPhone app due to the limitations of the SDK (like only one app running at a time). No need to be quiet about it. :)
  • WILL LOVE IT - THX to Dropbox-Team
  • dropbox android app = great great great !
  • lukic
    Great news.
Just please don't forget that some Android phones have 320x240 screen resolution ( HTC Tattoo, SE Xperia X10 Mini and Mini Pro) anf still thier owners would like to use apps just like other people do. Many application developers seem not to belive in that, even Google is among them.
  • Tom Meyer
We're testing it on 1.5 and small screens.

    Tom
  • lukic
    That is great.
    Thanks for your replay.
By the way, those phones that I mentioned are running on 1.6
  • fixedd
Smaller screens weren't supported till 1.6, so they'd have to be running at least that.
