Dropbox for Android: Introducing doc previews and smarter search

Our latest release of Dropbox for Android includes features like document previews and a completely redesigned search so you can get to the stuff you need, even faster.

Doc previews

You can now instantly preview any Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or PDF in your Dropbox straight from your Android device. This means you can view, scroll, and zoom in on your travel docs without needing to switch out of the Dropbox app.

Fun fact: This nifty feature was built by our engineering team on the ground in NYC. (If you’re interested in joining the team, check out our NYC jobs page!)

Smarter search

We also gave search on Android a huge overhaul so it’s quicker and easier to get to any of the stuff in your Dropbox. Here’s what’s new:

  • You can now search in specific folders, or in your entire Dropbox

  • Dropbox helps you stay organized by keeping track of your recent searches

  • The app now makes “typeahead” suggestions as you type in your searches

  • To make sure you don’t miss a thing, Dropbox highlights the names of matching files or folders as you type your search

This release also includes the ability to set view-only permissions on shared folders (available for Dropbox for Business teams in our early access program) and more. The new version of Dropbox for Android will be rolling out in the Play Store over the next several hours — or if you’ve signed up for early releases in your Android device settings, you can download it from your device notifications now!
